Prepare to be dazzled! Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) will present the musical 42nd Street, April 8-16, 2011 at the Coronado Performing Arts Center located at 650 D Avenue, Coronado, Ca., 92118. Show times are 7 p.m. on April 8, 9, 15, & 16 and 2 p.m. on April 10.
In this classic show about the magic of Broadway, notorious producer Julian Marsh has lost all of his money to the Great Depression, and his livelihood hinges on the success of his next production. The storyline follows Peggy Sawyer, an ingénue fresh off the bus from Allentown, Pennsylvania, and her rivalry with Broadway grande dame Dorothy Brock. Peggy gets her big break at the last minute, and she moves from chorus girl to star. But will she save the show?
With familiar songs such as “We’re in the Money” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” CoSA’s singers and dancers will showcase their tap-dancing skills. “This is the first-ever big tap show in the history of CoSA,” says director Dr. Barbara Wolf, head of the Musical Theatre and Drama program, “and we have really strong tappers. This show really spotlights our triple-threat performers that can sing, dance, and act.”
Learning how to master these three skills is one of the highlights of CoSA’s theatre program, and 42nd Street, with its focus on Broadway, is the perfect opportunity for young performers to bring their talents to the stage. The show will also feature a large cast with plenty of comedic roles. “It’s going to be spectacular!” says Wolf.
A stunning set built by students in CoSA’s Technical Theatre program provides a striking backdrop for the show. The set features moving pieces, including building facades and a double-decker train car. Over 100 intricate costumes and exceptional lighting design add to the sparkle of this production that takes place in the recently renovated, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center.
42nd Street will offer something for everyone, so bring your families and don’t miss this exceptional show! Tickets range from $6 to $16 and may be purchased online at www.cosafoundation.org or at the door 45 minutes before showtime. For more information please call 619.522.4050.
