san diego skyline

i did a little experimenting with some long exposures last night as the last rays of sun were fading. i set up my d3s with two filters..one was a very dark 10 stop filter and the other was a two stop polarizing filter. what would normally be a 1/30 sec exposure now became a 4 minute exposure. the lengthy exposure allows the water to become silky and the clouds become blurred. another benefit: harbor boats and kayaks that pass through the frame "disappear" because they do not remain long enough to be captured. i will post a 9 minute exposure later. i welcome any comments

This photo is so beautiful Mike.  Appreciate the explanation of how you captured it as well.  Stunning.

Great shot Mike!  You have a fantastic eye for composition.  I also like your experiments with exposure times.  It is a cool look on this downtown skyline shot.  I will look for more of your work!

B & W should be great Mike.  I will check it out.  You do good work.

I have to start experimenting with the long exposure shots.

Long exposures requiring extrapolation of shutter timing are fun. Good job!

I noticed you posted this comment about Mike's shot Dan.  I have seen your work in your gallery Dan and it is very impressive.  Mike should be very pleased that he gets a thumb's up from you for his work.  I am sure you guys have seen Peter Lik's work.  I like his stuff.  I have been over to Vegas numerous times and walked through his galleries there.  Not quite ready to pay $4K for one of his shots though.  Thanks for sharing your shots and your insight guys!

Hey Michael G,  Thanks for the kind post!  Mike has always done some interesting things.  Next time in Vegas go to the Rodney Lough Jr. Wilderness Gallery near MGM Plaza.  He is probably the greatest living landscape artist.  His work truly is worth a trip to Vegas!  My gallery is moving, and will have a grand opening in about a month.  Hope you can come by!

Amazing! Make sure you copyright this photo! Put your stamp on it otherwise, other people might claim to have taken this shot themselves.
