Though Victorian travelers loved the tonic effects of saltwater, few knew how to swim, often preferring to venture out only if they were tethered – by rope – to someone planted firmly on the beach. As an alternative to actual surf bathing (from where the term bathing suit derives), the Hotel del Coronado had its own hot and cold “saltwater plunge” located on Glorietta Bay, where fresh seawater was pumped into a protected bathhouse. For those guests who found even this sheltered environment too off-putting, hot and cold saltwater was piped into the hotel’s bathrooms (as was fresh water) so guests could bathe privately in the ocean’s waters.

What are some things you love about Coronado? Favorite places on the island?: I got to go on the bridge before it opened. My Uncle Bill was in the Navy and he had access at that time. I loved the serenity of the island in the 50's and 60's.... very lazy summer days and lots of SPACE!!!! Not much space any more but STILL plenty of serenity all around. I love the breeze. I liked all those girls too.
