If you haven't read Three Cups of Tea (www.threecupsoftea.com), you need to read it.  Ms. Amy Steward, Village Elementary School's fifth grade teacher read it and then had her class read it.  Voila, it was the seed for the fifth grade's project. Now Amy is taking her name to a higher level (steward-ship)!!  The class's goal to raise Pennies For Peace is $15,000 and the Coronado community is rallying to the cause.  This week, I was browsing the shops… Continue

Former surf band member, longtime Coronado teacher Bob Demmon, dies at 71

When Bob Demmon arrived in Coronado in the late 1960s to take a teaching job, some of his students were a bit star-struck by their new instructor.

A former member of the surf band The Astronauts, the young musician had released several albums with the group and toured throughout the country and Japan before settling in San Diego County.

During his first days on the Coronado High School campus, he was told he shouldn’t be in the teacher’s lounge by staff members who…

Coronado golf pro thrilled for shot at big time

Brian Smock has played enough golf around San Diego County that he can rattle off a list of places where he owns the course record.

He’s most proud of the 60 he shot at his home course, Coronado Municipal. And there are a handful of others, including Salt Creek, Vineyard, North Island, even Real Del Mar Golf Resort, between Tijuana and Rosarito in Baja California.

But of all the courses in San Diego County, the two he wouldn’t mind owning the records on are the tracks…

That address is available to you on the Internet at www.coronadousd.net. My hope is that you will read the address, especially the many proposals suggested for the 2011-2012 school year. One of these recommendations is that we all meet as a community in a summit to discuss these educational proposals and… Continue

A Man's A Man For A That

January 25 is Robert Burns' birthday, one of the most celebrated, and certainly the sentimental favorite poet of Scotland. Every year, fans of the man and his works celebrate his birthday by holding a Robert Burns Supper. Since his arrival in Coronado in 1959, my father George Sanger has been looking for someone with whom to celebrate this festive occasion.  For a few years he would hoist a few wee drams with Paul and Rita Hathaway, but when they moved away, he…
