Editor's Note: Way to go CHS boys lacrosse! Congratulations!
LA MESA – It took Bobby Braun all of 17 seconds to roll his eyes and think, “Oh, boy. Here we go again.”
Braun was on the field for Coronado in last year's section boys lacrosse championship, which the Islanders lost 15-5 to La Costa Canyon.
But in a rematch last night at Helix High, Braun had a revelation after the Islanders fell behind 1-0 just 17 seconds into the…

If Hanalei Bay in Kauai — the No. 1 stretch of sand on Dr. Beach’s 2009 list — is feeling about as accessible to you as Shangri-La, you don’t have to move too much further down the list to find a gem in our own Southern California.
Holding the No. 4 spot (up from No. 5 last year), Coronado Beach is a “veritable oasis by the sea,” according to the good doctor, who is actually coastal expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, director of Florida International University’s Laboratory for…

This morning was a pivotal point in the completion of Rotary Plaza!.
The fountain and center piece of the plaza was cast in concrete. It culminated a lot of preparation work such as all the underground piping for water circulation to the 27 jets that will shoot water out of the fountain powered by a 25 HP pump. The very elaborate electrical conduits in copper to illuminate these "water spouts" with 24 spot lights of 250 Watts EACH and a center light with a 500 Watt lamp (6.5…

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.
Catholics, including many American bishops, were in a collective tizzy over Notre Dame’s invitation to President Barack Obama to deliver the commencement address to this year’s graduating class. Because of his pro-choice views, they felt he should not be honored with a platform at what some consider America’s most prestigious Catholic university. The president was also awarded an honorary doctorate.
Personally, I believe it perfectly…

The first thing most people get wrong about Navy SEALs is that they love the limelight.
"Three Navy SEAL snipers take out Somali pirates," the headlines trumpeted a few weeks back. "Head shots, every one!"
In Coronado, where they put incoming would-be SEALs through BUDs, there were groans. BUDs stands for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL — the six-month course you have to get through, just to start the three-year process of becoming a SEAL.
"Oh, great," they…

Richard Kenney is living proof that some penguins fly.
The Coronado resident spent 22 years in the military as a pilot. Like a lot of fighter jocks, his career was punctuated by the sudden clipping of wings – either his or the other guy's.
During World War II, he shot down four enemy planes and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross before anti-aircraft fire knocked him out of the sky over Sicily.
He was captured and sent to Stalag Luft III, a German prisoner of…

Coronado mentioned in this article:
Ferry fun: Nothing says amour more than a boat ride. Just ask Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. The good news is that catching the Coronado Ferry is a lot less inexpensive ($6.50 per person for a round trip) and dangerous than hitching a ride on the Titanic. Many of the restaurants on the Coronado side have daily happy hours, including
Candelas, which has half-price…

CORONADO — Coronado officials first proposed a new lifeguard-service building about five years ago, angering nearby residents who feared that it would block their ocean views.
But after construction of a smaller version was finished April 1, Coronado lifeguard Capt. Sean Carey said he isn't hearing complaints.
“The only peep I hear is that people walk by and they want a tour,” he said. “They like it.”
The 2,574-square-foot building, which cost about $1.1…
