Concert in the Park Piss-Up - A New Zealand Inspired Food & Wine Picnic

Inspired by my Daring Bakers' Challenge of the month, Pavlova, I suggested New Zealand cuisine for our Sunday Concert in the Park Culinary Challenge of the week. Kai nominated John to prepare the traditional Maori hangi, but we attract enough attention as it is. Can you envision John, getting to the park extra early, and digging a deep hole to be lined with… Continue

Coronado Sufing Video by Orange & Park

When you think of the best breaks in San Diego, Coronado doesn't exactly rocket to the forefront of your mind. Maybe Trestles, Swami's, Blacks or Windansea but not Outlet, G Street and Shipwrecks. Despite the naysayers, there is a small legion of Coronadians that would rather make due than brave the bridge and, surprisingly, it ain't all that bad. Between January and June of 2010 Orange and Park accumulated 1,000s of surf shots from North down to Silver Strand. Sure, there were some small days… Continue

Candidacy Announcement: Doug Metz Will Run for City Council in November General Election

Dear eCoronado.com Editor:

As Coronado’s school board president, I fostered a team approach to problem solving and public policy decisions. I believe that our city council can benefit from this closer style of teamwork to meet the fiscal, environmental and quality of life issues facing our community. Many of these issues result from actions taken in Sacramento, Washington, DC, and beyond.

Having served in Washington DC, Sacramento, and here in Coronado, I believe that I can… Continue

(062810) Decision Time in Afghanistan by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

My reaction on reading reporter Michael Hastings’ nasty little expose, “Stanley Mc Chrystal: The Runaway General” in Rolling Stone was amazement over how a four-star general who was supposedly so intelligent could be so stupid as to permit a reporter to accompany him and his traveling staff to… Continue

Should Elena Kagan be Confirmed by J. F. Kelly, Jr. (062810)

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

I seldom respond directly to letters or articles critical of positions taken in my commentaries. I consider myself fortunate to have venues for expressing my opinions and, having had my say, I believe that others should have a chance to disagree. Sometimes, however, a re-rebuttal seems in order if it provides additional information for readers to weigh.…

CORONADO SURF RESTRICTIONS

Does anyone know which idiot determined the new surfing area near Shipwreck Beach? The surfing area is now restricted to the beach in front of the parking lot, south to the Amphib Base, half of which is the shipwreck. Seems to me, that the City doesn't care one flip about surfers, who are taxpayers too.

The lifeguard told me to go to Central Beach. Yeah, ever tried to get a parking space there on a weekend?

La Jolla Kayak Adventure: Explore the 7 Caves

Let me start by saying that Coronado is the most wonderful place in the world and there are tons of activities and things to do without every having to cross the bridge. That being said, our family was looking for a 'staycation' San Diego activity and when we discovered the 'Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves', we had to hop in the car and make our way up to La Jolla. If Coronado only had… Continue

Coronado Concerts in the Park and the Exotic Cuisine of Thailand

Our Coronado Concert in the Park Culinary Challenges continued last Sunday evening with The Exotic Cuisine of Thailand. Thai cuisine places emphasis on lightly-prepared dishes with strong aromatic components, and is known for its balance of the five fundamental taste senses in each dish or the overall meal: hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty, and (optional) bitter. A Thai family meal normally consists of rice, paired with several dishes designed to form a harmonious contrast of ingredients… Continue
