A Liberal Vendetta (083109) by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

The much-maligned Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is not among America’s most cherished institutions. Few mothers encourage their children to grow up to be CIA agents. Americans have been conditioned by a liberal media to expect the worst of the CIA and, to be sure, the CIA sometimes obliges with clumsy operations and flawed intelligence estimates. No institution is perfect, least of all spy agencies. It’s a dirty job but somebody’s got to do… Continue

PSA: Texting while driving (not for the younger ones)

EVERY driver should see this, especially teenagers. It is very graphic and is recommended for 18 and older but if they wait till 18 to see it, they may not reach 18. As firefighters, we see this stuff all too often and it is getting worse every year.

PARENTS: Watch this by yourself first then WITH your kids (the comments posted below the video on… Continue

Coasting: Coronado - Cyclists' mecca a smooth cruise

Two-wheeled travel a way of life in Coronado

Even in Coronado, a town teeming with bicycles, resident Ted Gibbon cuts an unusual figure as he pedals around.

People stop him several times a week to take photos of two pint-size pooches, Rickie and Lucie, that poke out of a wicker basket on the front of his electric-blue bike. Gibbon rides about 10 miles a day, crisscrossing this so-called Crown City and stopping at the ferry landing so he can chat with old-timers over… Continue

Lost Blanket

Someone accidentally picked up my blanket and water bottle at last Sundays concert in the park when the Marine Band played. If anyone finds they have a large beach blanket/towel with tie down rings on each corner that doesn't belong to them, please let me know. We are renting our house while we live on the island and the blanket belongs to the owners. I hate to have something lost that doesn't belong to me. A Strojny

Clinton Golfs Coronado

Earlier in the day, we saw how President Clinton spent his time here in San Diego. He took in the California sun at the Coronado municipal golf course with his bodyguards in tow. Wearing a straw hat, black shirt and black shorts -- at least he was in black --- the president can be seen getting out of a sand trap and then dropping a second ball on the green. He waves to the person with the video camera and laments his inability to score well. Then,… Continue

Uplifting footnote to 1940 teen tennis tragedy

So what made him chase the teenage ghost in tennis whites?

What drew the New York writer to the mythic story of the most promising player of his generation, a Coronado kid lost to death and then reborn as a shining ideal?

“It was a mystery,” John Martin said in an e-mail last week. “I couldn't resist. I've been a reporter for 50 years, and I'd rarely found a story so compelling. It was triumph, tragedy, and finally triumph.”

In a ceremonial sense, we owe the… Continue

Another Triumph for Terrorism (082309) by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

Convicted Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was released from a Scottish prison where he was supposed to be serving a minimum 27-year term. He was sentenced by a Scottish judge in 2001 for the murder of 270 innocent persons who died in the explosion and crash of a New York-bound U.S. jetliner over the town of Lockerbie, Scotland.

Scotland’s Justice Secretary Kenny Mac Askill released Mr. al-Megrahi, who reportedly has… Continue

Coronado memories

I thoroughly enjoyed the interviews with Bruce Johnson. I was born in the same family hospital on North Island in 1946. I was raised in Coronado and raised my 3 boys there, too. I presently live in Gig Harbor, Wa., but travel back to Coronado to visit family. Bruce brought up a lot of great childhood memories for me. Thanks for all the great stories.

WHEN IS A BUILDING CODE NOT A BUILDING CODE????

CAYS CORNER

By: Ella Croshier

WHEN IS A BUILDING CODE NOT A BUILDING CODE????

The answer to that is when it applies to the Planned Community of Coronado Cays.

Currently building is proceeding on zero lot line homes with second stories permitted by the City of Coronado. The Coronado Cays Specific Plan Ordinance Section 90.10.100 states expansions are allowed only on the first floor and only within the outermost walls as constructed by… Continue
