Time to Get Serious about Missile Defense (092909) by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

President Barack Obama’s dream to rid the world of nuclear weapons faces a tough sell with current and aspiring members of the nuclear club. Nuclear weapons are seen as the great equalizer by second tier powers and wannabes that makes them players on the world scene and gains them attention. It’s hard to imagine North Korea, for example, giving up membership in the exclusive club or that Iran can be persuaded from seeking to… Continue

Chargers sue Foley to recoup bonus

Former Chargers linebacker Steve Foley is being sued in federal court by the team, which wants $416,666 that an arbitrator ruled he owed the club after a career-ending shooting by an off-duty policeman in 2006.

The suit says that Foley's contract in effect at the time called for a $1.25 million “signing, reporting and playing” bonus. But the deal also said if Foley could not play or otherwise breached the contract, he owed the club a default payment of one-third the signing bonus —… Continue

Coronado: California dreamin' at a castle by the sea

Disneyland is not the only California address boasting a castle. On an island to the south, at the end of a curving two-mile bay bridge from San Diego, Hotel del Coronado combines Victorian elegance with Tinseltown glamour.

Red turrets crown the huge oceanside national historic landmark. Opened in 1888 by Elisha Babcock and H.L. Story, "The Del" attracted socialites, celebrities, diplomats and urban-dwellers seeking rejuvenation in the cool surf and clean air.

Casino boat crashed into Coronado 70 years ago - "Busting the House"

Beachcombers poked at an exposed part of the Monte Carlo. When the boat hit the beach 70 years ago, roulette wheels, slot machines, dice, furniture and whiskey bottles cluttered the shore.

CORONADO – It was a novelty in 1936, the Monte Carlo, a ship the length of a football field anchored about 3 miles offshore.

Outside the bounds of state and federal law, yet only a water… Continue

SEAPLANES OF SAN DIEGO BAY By CDR Doug Siegfried, USN (Ret.)

Thanks to CDR Doug Siegfried (USN Ret.) for writing and sending eCoronado.com the below - this is great stuff!

It is difficult to believe, looking at San Diego Bay today with the Coronado Bridge and all the maritime traffic, that for 56 years large seaplanes majestically landed and took off in our bay.

The first American seaplane flight took place here in 1911, when Glenn Curtiss flew his hydro-aeroplane - a landplane fitted with a wide float - from a strip of… Continue

Speed Festival adding some vroom to its vintage

Coronado's 12th annual Speed Festival this weekend might not be as "vintage" as in past years.

But a new twist to the historic car show is going to add some thunder to the event staged at the North Island Naval Air Station.

A historic stock car class has been added to make up for some of the vintage stock lost to a new/rival historic car show also going on this weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma.

Because the Coronado Speed Festival does not have a NASCAR… Continue
