Village Theatre

I have wondered when this was going to happen, was very happy to attend yesterday and find out it WILL be restored and continue to show movies and be a location for activities. The small screening rooms will give it the flexibility to cater to anyone's needs. Hope to be able to see a movie when we return in mid-April.

You could smell the popcorn a block away....mmmm! The event is from 12pm to 6pm today.

As most of our readers know, the Village Theatre is finally getting renovated after being closed for the past 10 years. There was an 'open house' earlier today that showed off designs and offered attendees popcorn and soda. Both Lance Alspaugh (CEO of Five Star Theatres inc.) and Coronado's Mayor Tanaka spoke at the event and you could feel the 'buzz' in the air.

Construction will begin… Continue

Plans stall for fee-based preschool in Coronado

CORONADO — Coronado schools Superintendent Jeffrey Felix is backing away from a proposal for a fee-based preschool.

The move comes after several residents and staffers gathered to form a committee to study the matter last week.

The first meeting was held Sept. 23 at Coronado Unified School District offices, where teachers and parents expressed concern over the possible displacement of kindergartners and extra costs for the creation of the preschool at the Early Childhood… Continue

Surfers beware. The ship wreck is now partialy exposed

I surfed in front of the Cabrillo Tower at the Shores this afternoon and tripped over it as I was walking in. I felt an area of about 4'x4'x12", and with these swells, it will get even more exposed. I called the Lifeguard station to report.

Next Week is Fire Prevention Week--Open House October 3rd!

Just a reminder that next week is Fire Prevention Week--come to our Open House on October 3rd from 10:00-3:00pm!

The week that includes October 9th has been designated as Fire Prevention Week since 1925 when President Calvin Coolidge noted that the 15,000 lives lost to fire in the U.S. in the previous year was "startling". Union Tribune Editorial Board Endorse Denny & Ovrom

This fall’s election is an encore performance for Barbara Denny, Coronado City Council member.

Denny was the environmental attorney elected in May 2009 to fill a council vacancy. She championed the sensible cause that it was time for Coronado to quit spending other people’s money, namely the $13.5 million already gone on studies to build a tunnel through the city with no funding source in sight.

Village Theatre in Coronado set for renovation next week

Even before the downtown Village Theatre closed in 2000 — more than five decades after it opened with a double-feature showing of “Irish Eyes Are Smiling” and “The Well-Groomed Bride” — Coronado residents had rallied to save the quaint, Art Deco structure.

The continued drumbeat for preservation inspired city officials to issue a grant last year for a renovation project. Next Monday, after nearly 10 years of false starts and stalled negotiations, demolition and restoration will begin… Continue
