Cabrillo Lands Again - by Coronado 3rd Grader Mercy Tangredi

Cabrillo Lands Again

Mercy Tangredi

3rd Grade Reporter

On Sunday, October 2, 2011, Joao Rodrigues Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer sailing for the King of Spain once again landed to claim San Diego, this time at Naval Base Point Loma. But he was a re-enactor for the annual Cabrillo festival.

Mercy Tangredi tries on helmet.

He was rowed by sailors in red caps. He looked: serious, very hot in his armor and tough…

Bridgeworthy: Rancho Las Palmas Weekend Getaway (Photos)

Every so often, you know that it's time to escape the 'island'.  Not just Coronado, but the world that you have created around yourself:  work, bills, the never ending to-do list, chores, neighbors (not ours!) and sometimes, even your kids (yes, ours).  We were looking for a close escape that didn't require a flight or excessive driving, but still felt like a getaway.

We chose to spend a few days at Rancho Las Palmas Resort…

Bridgeworthy: Cross Two Bridges to See a Padres Game (Photos/Video)

Our son Luke wanted to go to his first Padres game to celebrate his 6th birthday.  Great idea!  He chose a friend to come with us and the family set off to enjoy a game at Petco Park.

When we started to plan the the event, we searched for tickets at both Padres.com and StubHub.com.  Both are trustworthy places to buy your tickets.  The next 'purchase' was finding a way over to…

Bridgeworthy: La Jolla Seals, Sea Lions and Cave Store Adventure

After a few days of rain last week, the sun emerged and we decided to head over the bridge to visit La Jolla.  It took about 30 minutes to wind our way to our destination and it was worth it.  Enjoy the photo recap and if you get a chance, be sure to set aside a day to explore the beautiful coastline of La Jolla:

Bridgeworthy: Point Loma Tidepools (U.S. National Park Service)

Since the sun wasn't cooperating to enjoy a warm beach day, I decided to take the kiddos out and explore the tide pools of Point Loma. I checked the tide chart and piled the crew into the car and headed over the bridge. Tip: go when the tide is low (not high).

Driving over takes about 25 minutes and as you near the entrance, you go through… Continue

La Jolla Kayak Adventure: Explore the 7 Caves

Let me start by saying that Coronado is the most wonderful place in the world and there are tons of activities and things to do without every having to cross the bridge. That being said, our family was looking for a 'staycation' San Diego activity and when we discovered the 'Kayak Tour of the 7 Caves', we had to hop in the car and make our way up to La Jolla. If Coronado only had… Continue

Bridgeworthy Places to Visit: Blueprint Cafe and Ryan Bros Coffee

Last week, I was craving something new and different from my normal dining routine here on the island. I had heard good things about two 'neighboring' businesses literally a block from the bridge in the Bario Logan neighborhood.

Tucked in the Barrio Logan neighborhood, Blueprint Café is located in an architect-owned building and boasts a bold and spirited interior. Our outdoor café makes lunch, or a glass of wine and wonderful light plates in… Continue
