A half-mile stretch of Glorietta Bay in the city of Coronado sat drab and dusty for decades. The bay front area was an odd assortment of permanent and semi-permanent military buildings repurposed to house the community facility, city offices and a community playhouse. Through thoughtful civic planning and land use the Glorietta Bay Civic Center and Promenade Project was created. The completed project is a shining example of how a large underused property can be…

As a kid, Rob Smith liked to take apart his dad’s stuff. Ever the fiddler, his father would find him time and again in deconstruction mode and eventually handed him a box of old watches purchased at an estate sale to tinker with. At the time, neither would have thought that would mark the beginning of what would eventually be a thriving business. Resco Instruments, founded by Smith in 2008, is a warrior-tested American watch brand, built right here in Coronado.
Smith is a…Continue
Lil’ Piggy’s Bar-B-Q first opened its doors at Coronado Ferry Landing, 1201 First Street, in 2008. The only Bar-B-Q joint in Coronado, Piggy's offers Memphis Style Bar-B-Q, which is cooked “low and slow.” The meats are smoked for hours on low temperatures for extended periods of time. Pure hickory wood is used to flavor and cook the meats. The redness in the meat is a sign of flavor penetration called the “smoke ring.” Along with the moist pulled pork and bar-b-q ribs, there…

Nerdwallet.com recent compiled a list of "Cities on the Rise" in California, looking for cities with growth in working-age population, percentage of employed residents, and median income. Coronado ranked second out of the 325 cities on the list, largely due to a surge in median income and an increase in the number of working-age residents between 2009 and 2012. Like most hospitals, Sharp Coronado occasionally has medical supplies and equipment that are due for replacement of upgrading, yet are still usable. Sadly in the past most of it went to the dump, but thanks to the efforts of two women – Renee Huslin and Laura Luxemburg -- that is changing. Coronado is pretty much built out. There aren’t too many vacant lots, except in the last place you would expect to find one - right on the bayfront of Ferry Landing. For the past 15 years there’s been an abandoned piece of land between Il Foranio and the Coronado Bay Club, distinguished only by dirt, weeds, and a lonely “for lease sign.”
But that may soon change. An experienced restaurateur has signed a letter of intent to build a sushi and steak…
