“The nation’s transportation program has not been significantly updated since the creation of the Interstate Highway System in the 1950s,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom of San Francisco, among 65 leaders to sign a letter to Boxer who sits on the…

Union Tribune Editorial Board Endorse Denny & Ovrom

This fall’s election is an encore performance for Barbara Denny, Coronado City Council member.

Denny was the environmental attorney elected in May 2009 to fill a council vacancy. She championed the sensible cause that it was time for Coronado to quit spending other people’s money, namely the $13.5 million already gone on studies to build a tunnel through the city with no funding source in sight.

Coronado City Manager Blair King, a career administrator who ran Imperial Beach in the 1990s but assumed his current post less than three months ago, disclosed his $193,000 salary documented with his contract and latest pay stub within 24 hours.

“Coronado is doing better than many other communities but it is our obligation to spend every tax dollar as wisely as we can,” he said in a follow-up interview. “We want to be transparent. The public needs to know how much people are being… Continue

Sliding toward Socialism by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

While most Americans weren’t paying attention, the Obama Administration pulled another fast one. Using a recess appointment, President Barack Obama named Dr, Donald Berwick to head the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Dr. Berwick will thus exercise substantial control over how Obamacare is administered. His giant agency will account for about one-sixth of the economy and have a budget bigger than that… Continue

United States vs. Arizona by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

In a rational world, you would expect that a national government would welcome the assistance of state and local law enforcement agencies in supporting the laws of the land. Indeed, that is the case in many countries but not always here. This might seem passing strange to an objective observer because the federal government certainly needs help in enforcing its laws. That is, of course, if the federal government… Continue

Oil in Our Future by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

Commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

Southerners have a way of pronouncing it with one syllable (as in ohl). Others require two (as in oy-yul). But however you pronounce it, you can be certain that it will be around for a very long time. Contrary to popular myths and President Barack Obama, we are not close to running out of it or of places to drill for it.

Save-the-planet activists are taking advantage of the ongoing Gulf spill disaster to… Continue

(062810) Decision Time in Afghanistan by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

My reaction on reading reporter Michael Hastings’ nasty little expose, “Stanley Mc Chrystal: The Runaway General” in Rolling Stone was amazement over how a four-star general who was supposedly so intelligent could be so stupid as to permit a reporter to accompany him and his traveling staff to… Continue

Should Elena Kagan be Confirmed by J. F. Kelly, Jr. (062810)

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

I seldom respond directly to letters or articles critical of positions taken in my commentaries. I consider myself fortunate to have venues for expressing my opinions and, having had my say, I believe that others should have a chance to disagree. Sometimes, however, a re-rebuttal seems in order if it provides additional information for readers to weigh.…

Cut Israel Some Slack by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

After repeated, well-publicized warnings that it would prevent by force if necessary, a group of ships, organized by a Turkish-based pro-Hamas organization with other links to terrorism, loaded with a meager cargo of humanitarian aid and a large cargo of loud-mouthed, anti-Israeli activists, from breaking its naval blockade of Gaza, Israel did what it said it would. All of the ships except one were boarded… Continue

Awash in Oil by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A Commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

The oil spewing into the Gulf of Mexico dominates the national news as it should. It is already a man-made disaster of gigantic proportions that is causing immense harm to the sea and coastal environment and to the people who live and work there. Regardless now of when the flow is finally stopped, it will likely take decades to recover from the damage already done. We can only grieve for the many people affected and search for ways to reach out to… Continue

Judging Elena Kagan by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

President Barack Obama has nominated Solicitor General Elena Kagan to fill the U. S. Supreme Court seat held for 34 years by liberal Justice John Paul Stevens who is retiring. This selection has delighted neither liberals nor conservatives. The former would, of course, prefer a nominee more liberal even than Stevens, if that’s possible. Conservatives, naturally, will oppose almost anyone nominated by Mr. Obama.

Kagan, however, would appear… Continue

Standing Up to Washington by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

Everyone knows that border security in this country is a joke. The southern border is a giant portal through which drug and human smugglers move their illegal cargo almost at will. These operations have become profitable business for Mexican criminals and the Mexican government is unwilling to stop them. So, for that matter, is Washington.

Our federal government simply hasn’t the will to do what is… Continue

Overhauling Immigration Policy by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

With Obamacare now a reality, the Democrat- controlled Congress will eventually turn to immigration reform, another important item on the administration’s ambitious domestic agenda. Most members of Congress would probably prefer to wait until after the fall elections. They fear alienating one group of supporters or another and since this is all about politics and reelection, immigration reform may be temporarily… Continue
