Which Wine Type Are You?

Have you ever wondered about the shapes of wine bottles? Are the different shapes random happenstance or are they part of a great plan?  Believe it or not, the shapes

of wine bottles are actually well calculated to match the styles of specific wines.  If you love burgundy wine, then your bottle type has sloping shoulders and a tall appearance or if you…

Wine & War

I was reading an article on www.wineeconomist.comby Mike Veseth. He pointed out how human conflict sooner or later reveals itself in wine. I find this thought-provoking -  history has shown us this reality and it is certainly present today whether across borders, states, or even…

The Art Of Barrel Making

I am taking a course through Sonoma State University and this link was on my syllabus as useful information.

It shows just what an old-world art form barrel making still is.  It was fun to see this video was from "Goosecross Cellars" as this is who I did my latest project on for this course!

Wine Questions You Wish Someone Would Answer...

I have some great followers on Deep Red Cellar and I appreciate you letting me indulge in spouting off about the pleasures of food and wine.

Scott Pugh, a friend and wine-enthusiast, is one such follower.  He wrote asking questions that have come up as he advances in his personal wine enjoyment.  I thought the questions were good so wanted…

Bridgeworthy: Caffe Calabria Part II

The taunting did not last long.  I found myself back at Caffe Calabria Saturday evening trying their pizza.  I don't know if it was because it had been over a year since I sunk my teeth into true Neapolitan pizza or if it was just because I really, really wanted the food to be sort of…

Secrets to Italian Wine

After living in Italy for 3 years and learning as much as I could about Italian wine I figured out a few keys that may be helpful for people trying to unlock the secrets to Italian wine and find something really good to drink.

It was an arduous task...tasting, traveling and conversing but I was able to work through it and set up a delectable nearly 500 bottle wine collection.… Continue

From Coronado to Montalcino, Italy - Interview with Laura Gray, Il Palazzone Estate

I met Laura through this website when she read my article on a trip to Montalcino. I was sadden to learn I was a stone's throw from Il Palazzone while tromping around Montalcino and missed their winery entirely. Laura and I have become "Internet friends" over the last year as I've become enamoured with Il Palazzone. I was thrilled Laura took the time out of her…

Almost But Not Quite

My husband brought me a couple bottles of Pinot Noir back from a recent trip he took to Vancouver, British Columbia. And if you're thinking it, you're right.....he is a good man.

I have to say, I've not heard much hype about Pinot Noirs from Canada (or any for that matter) but was hopeful as I've tasted a few good wines from our northern… Continue

Who Knew....A Shoe!

Now here is an interesting way to open a bottle of wine (complements of YouTube - who else)!

I was just curious enough to try this myself. After studying the video I gave it a try but my bottle just wouldn't open. I thought maybe for some peculiar reason it was because I was trying to open a white wine. So I went back to my wine stash and this time grabbed not only a red, but a French red thinking maybe the French bottle their wine specifically so it can be opened with a shoe. Maybe… Continue

A Very Nifty Wine Gadget

I was roaming the streets of Montalcino on a very blustery, cold January day when I stopped in a restaurant for lunch. As I settled into the warmth of the restaurant, I discovered something spectacular. At a nearby table, the waiter was pouring a glass of wine for a customer using the coolest gadget I'd ever seen! It attached to the wine bottle much like a cork stopper but had an almost Medusa like… Continue

A Surfer's Wine

I have some good news! I have found a really good wine that does not taste like it was made for every wine drinker on the planet. You may think that is NOT good news, but I say it is. After living in Italy for 3 years, I came home to America to find most of the "everyday drinking" wines tasting the same - all geared toward ease of drinking but lacking in complexity and finish. But alas, I have stumbled… Continue
