I am a recent CHS grad (2011) and former Coronado resident currently living in New York going to school for Advertising. My school, Iona College has mission trips every year. I would love to go, however the cost of the airfare is expensive! It is almost $2000.00!
I need help from the community in order to raise money to go to Peru and serve alongside the Christian brothers and work at an orphange and go on a journey that is a once in a lifetime opportunity.…

Coronado is a popular city not only for its small- town like qualities but even more so for the military personnel who reside on the island and the Navy bases that resides here to. A machine used for dredging.
On many different occasions dredging took place on Coronado Island. There were many different occasions when dredging was used for many different aspects and different reasons. In order to provide more land for the military to use and to expand the shore. The biggest dredging in Coronado’s history was when the War Department began dredging the San Diego Bay in 1944 to create an enlarged basin for Navy ships, the…

An old photograph of Orange Ave. (1800-1889)
When we drive through Coronado, one of the first streets we drive down is Orange Avenue. It is probably the most popular street because it runs through the center of town and leads to our crown jewel-The Hotel Del Coronado. Ever wonder why it was named “Orange Avenue”? Originally, Orange Avenue was lined with orange trees planted there when Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story- bought the island.…

An old picture of the Hotel Del Coronado.
I remember the first time I entered the Hotel Del, I was about seven or eight years old, and we were meeting a friend who was visiting from out of town and staying at the Del. I can remember going over the bridge was magical; it was like entering a whole another world. We went down Orange Avenue, it was late afternoon early evening and there was not too much traffic. We passed by all kinds of shops…

Have you ever seen the movie The Incredibles? Edna Head’s features were inspired by the world famous fashion designer, Edith Head. At the Coronado Library there is a dedication to Edith Head which consists of some of her designs and sketches. It is truly a fascinating and amazing exhibit, I encourage all of you to go and visit her work.
Edith Head was famous for her costumes in many movies such as
Sabrina,

To get around the island here in Coronado, most people use a bike. As many of you know, Coronado is a safe place to live, however that does not mean that there is not crime. According to Lea Corbin of the Coronado Police Department “Where there are people there is crime”. There have been many rumors going around about the amount of bikes stolen, some even reaching 100 per week. I met with Lea Corbin to find out if those rumors were in fact true.…

A picture I took on one of my first days living in Coronado!
Growing up for anyone is hard. According to Peter Pan it is “extremely difficult”. However, Peter lived in London and we live in Coronado-and personally, I like it here better! We have much nicer weather and it feels much safer here. But anyway you look at it, growing up is hard-especially when you wake up one day and realized you are a teenager. Being a teenager anywhere is a…
