Today our United States Navy celebrated its 237th birthday. That line holds countless stories in itself, some from years ago and some we’ve yet to hear, however, as stated on the navy.mil website, “we honor the Sailors that came before us and the ones who keep us strong today." People celebrated today in various ways, with many sailors being on a current deployment, however for those on our home front the…

Killer Whales spotted off San Diego coastline

Most of you know that I sail on the Aolani Catamaran as it is my family's business. Today we didn't sail, however a former Captain of ours did. Ken Manzoni, owner of Adventure Rib Rides here in San Diego, spotted killer whales not far from our Coronado coastline this morning. A mother orca whale along with her calf cruised alongside Captain Ken's NAVY Rib boat for over 20…

Black Sea Nettle Jellyfish wash ashore on Coronado Beach due to Algal Bloom

Though I’m usually out sailing on the water, yesterday afternoon I was running along side of it. Over the infamous dunes that spell out Coronado and past our central lifeguard tower, I was heading north alongside the ocean when I came across a jellyfish; deep purple like a plum. I was so tempted to touch it, but was glad that I didn’t as I later found out that it was a Black Sea Nettle (Chrysaora achlyos),  a rare species of jellyfish found only in the Pacific Ocean and…

It’s been a while since my last update, not because of a lack in updates happening on the water around us, but because I ended up on a backpacking adventure in Asia. That, though, is a whole ‘nother story for a whole ‘nother post.

Just before my adventures abroad, I interviewed four Coronado women residents who with a passion for sailing and the open ocean, just like myself. The story was published in the latest Coronado Lifestyle…

Get ready for Coronado & San Diego Bay updates - from the water!

I remember flying back into San Diego last summer after I had just finished college, it was evening and the sun had set, leaving the sky a bright but dark blue. We swung South as if we were headed to Mexico, then looped around, Airport bound. I was sitting on the left side of the plane, window seat as usual, and saw the Coronado Bay Bridge in all its glory, still standing just as…
