Some solace for Coronado's parking woes?

I posted this originally in a response to a photo about Coronado's "unique" and very complicated relationship with parking challenges in town, but I thought the topic of car sharing might make a better conversation in it's own blog entry.

If you've seen the little blue and white "car2go" cars over in San Diego the operating area does not yet currently extend into Coronado, but they are working on it.  In studies to date, every car2go takes about 8-15 other cars off the road as people…

1906 Lodge a charming jewel in Coronado's crown (review)

I was looking for a nice surprise treat for my wife on her birthday today.  I managed to get my shift covered so that we could spend it together--just the two of us.  We made plans to go sailing with friends on her birthday (today, Monday) and when the busy Sunday schedule suddenly cleared out, I thought: maybe I'll find us a room in Coronado, sort of a busman's holiday.  ;-)

eCoronado.com is my home page and I happened to see Fred Eckert asking for…

New electric vehicle charger installed in Coronado!

Just saw that two new electric vehicle charging stations have been installed next to City Hall!  These Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (or EVSE's) stations made by "Blink" are being offered FOR FREE through a grant administered by a company called Ecotality.

A hearty THANK YOU to our forward-thinking City Council and the staff who worked on setting this up!  Now let's get some MORE!!    ;-)…

A Rant Endorsing Peohe's Restaurant at the Ferry Landing

A "rant" is sometimes defined as: "to speak or shout at length in a wild or impassioned way".  So with that caveat in mind, I beg your indulgence to allow me the following long-winded "rant":  I simply MUST give some MAJOR kudos to one of our fine local establishments here in Coronado: Peohe's at the Coronado Ferry Landing!

I got home this morning completely exhausted after another incredibly busy 72-hour shift. I had finally gotten to…

Memorial for 9/11 at HQ Fire Station at 6:53 am

If you're going to miss the many other memorials on Sunday for any reason (football!?!) or if you'd like to mark the day and pay homage with your firefighters, we will be holding our annual memorial in front of the HQ Fire Station (1001 Sixth) starting at 06:53 in the morning.  All are welcome to attend.

I can still recall waking up to the news that morning and then the abrupt, incredulous interruption . . . kissing my wife goodbye a little longer than usual . . . and leaving…

Sneak Peek at Village Theatre!!!

Had a walk-through the other day to tour the state of the art Village Theatre: the classic art deco theatre with all the most modern technology.  We were all VERY impressed--but I was especially struck by the murals adorning the walls of the main screening room.  One side looks like Coronado by night with sparkling stars above and shimmering water below.  On the other wall is the San Diego skyline as seen from across the bay here in Coronado.  VERY well done--it will blow your mind.  They…

Firefighters' Give Burns the Boot Drive?

It's too bad Coronado was not one of the 100 "Fill The Boot" drive locations in San Diego County yesterday.

If you didn't catch one of the firefighters across the bridge, you can still go to www.burninstitute.org for more helpful burn prevention information and/or to make a donation to a VERY worthy cause.  Also check the schedule of events and come check out the Coronado Firefighters entry in the…

Priming the Pump for the Holiday Season With Random Acts of Culture: Sing Hallelujah!

Do yourself a favor and set aside the next 6 minutes to watch the amazing video at the link below:

I've been singing "The Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's "Messiah!" since before I was born . . . I was born in March and my mother sang it with the Choir at Cornell University in December . . . . ;-)

I've sung it at least a hundred times since with various groups for varying degrees of remuneration . . . but I would have PAID serious money to have… Continue

Why were the Coronado Police Officers shrouding their badges yesterday?

Coronado Firefighters featured in the 2009 California Firehouse Cookbook!

I just posted most of this in a comment to the excellent pictorial write-up by Denise E. Jones on the recent Fire Department Open House: http://www.ecoronado.com/profiles/blogs/coronado-fire-department-open-1, but I thought I should mention it here separately as well.

Firefighters like to fix things--it's what we love to do. Say you're having a bad day, or a REALLY bad day . . . we come and try to fix it and make it better. Since… Continue

Next Week is Fire Prevention Week--Open House October 3rd!

Just a reminder that next week is Fire Prevention Week--come to our Open House on October 3rd from 10:00-3:00pm!

The week that includes October 9th has been designated as Fire Prevention Week since 1925 when President Calvin Coolidge noted that the 15,000 lives lost to fire in the U.S. in the previous year was "startling". His proclamation stated in part: "This waste results from the conditions which justify a sense of shame and… Continue

We pause to remember this day . . . .

I am in Colorado Springs, CO this week at the Annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial which this year happens to also fall on September 11th. This memorial is to comfort the families and friends of firefighters who have died in the line of duty in the past year and pay their sacrifices tribute, but on this day it carries an even greater significance.

Rest in peace, my Brothers and Sisters. May we continue to learn from your sacrifices.

"I can think of no more stirring symbol of… Continue

New Restaurant in the Cays--the Calypso Cafe!

The Calypso Cafe, which used to be just a little kiosk outside the offices near the Coronado Cays Yacht Club has expanded into a full-fledged cafe. They serve an interesting assortment of choices you won't find in most places (lots of organic choices) and do breakfasts and lunches. We stumbled upon the change a while back and when we stopped in to check on progress yesterday morning the owner was awaiting her final inspection from the Health Department to officially start serving. The actual… Continue

Had a great time at the Yogurt Escape event tonight!

I know Steve will be posting a proper write-up later with pics and all, but I just wanted to post a quick THANKS to eCoronado.com and Yogurt Escape for putting on this fun event!

I'm actually posting this from the new Rotary Park on my laptop! The City has provided free wireless in Rotary Park . . . and there's even power available at the base of the pole furthest from Orange Ave! ;-)

I'm sitting here in my shorts and new "92118" T-Shirt enjoying the perfect evening in… Continue

PAWS needs your help--come to the 1st Annual Casino Night Saturday, October 24

Most of you know that the fine folks at the Pacific Animal Welfare Society, or PAWS have been working hard on behalf of our Coronado animals for a number of years. They've long championed a new animal shelter as well as a number of other great programs. They rely completely on volunteers and on your donations to keep their efforts going and fund their programs. Their efforts helped the Coronado Firefighters save a cat at a house fire just two days ago (see the story below) and now they need… Continue

Why I went Solar . . . and why Coronado should too!

Disclaimer: I have no affiliation to Coronado's Sullivan Solar Power, but I heartily agree with their mission: to make Coronado a 100% Solar City. Homegrown energy independence is America's future and Coronado can lead the way for the entire country!

My story: back in the dark days of late 2000 when the arch-demons of Enron were mercilessly raping and… Continue

Glossary for n00bs, newbies and the otherwise "new to the 'net".

I think this site is one of the best things to happen to Coronado in a long time! Information is power and when we share that information/knowledge in a forum like this, the benefits increase exponentially. Our numbers continue to grow by the day which is awesome! As witnessed by a few of the questions I've seen posted in response to articles or comments on articles (like: "What does 'IMHO' mean?"), it also struck me that this online forum is attracting more and more folks with . . . even a bit… Continue

Unexpected treats for a boy and his dog in Coronado today!

I took my puppy down to dog beach today--still one of the nicest off-leash dog parks/beaches ever--to try to run some of that "puppy energy" out of her. We had a great time as usual and the day was perfect. I was feeling a bit peckish afterwards and wanted to grab a bite, but couldn't just waltz into Miguel's with my puppy in tow. I then remembered there were outside tables at the Ferry Landing and I had seen dogs there before.

So we headed to the other end of town and I inquired… Continue
