A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.
Its massive medical care overhaul plans in tatters, the Obama administration will turn now to what’s left of its ambitious but overreaching domestic agenda. While job creation and job stabilization is what Americans need and want most now, what they are likely to get next is an attempt at a massive overhaul of immigration policy. It will probably turn out as badly as the last attempt.
Perhaps Mr. Obama and the Democratic-controlled…

CORONADO — At low tide, in the sands beneath the towering Coronado Shores condominiums, lie signs of buried pleasure.
Recent storms have temporarily washed away layers of beach that usually entomb the remains of an old gambling ship called the S.S. Monte Carlo, which ran aground 73 years ago. Portions of the 300-foot vessel now lie exposed to sun, surf and sightseers. A Coronado city crew examined the wreck yesterday, removing…

CORONADO: Coronado officials are warning swimmers and surfers to stay clear of the wreckage of the S.S. Monte Carlo, an old gambling ship that ran aground near the Coronado Shores 74 years ago.
Recent heavy storms and high tides have exposed the wreck, as they have from time to time over the years. The ship was especially visible yesterday near the Shores’ El Camino tower off Silver Strand Boulevard.
City crews worked yesterday to remove some of the exposed rebar from the…

The world looks very different from 40 feet up, hanging onto a rope wall. My advice? Don’t look down.
A lot phenomenally fit people, including world-famous athletes and Olympians, have frozen at the top of the wall, which is part of the legendary obstacle course on the Navy SEAL base in Coronado, Calif. Who knew that vertigo routinely kicks in at 40 feet without a safety…

It’s often the case where a truly inspiring human being is asked “who inspires you?” With our 35 under 35 community leaders, we asked the same question. The answers were an array of sorts. From a former basketball player to the county’s district attorney, to a 12-year-old who gave a noteworthy speech to the United Nations, to simply, everyday volunteers who allocate a certain amount of time each week for the greater good.…

Graham Memorial Preschool sent home a flyer today explaining there was a child that had evidence of head lice. The preschool received this information anonymously and are not able to identify the class. So, we checked our son who attends Graham Memorial Preschool (619-435-2182) and our child has head lice. After consulting with a few Coronado parents, there were additional cases of lice as well.
We also checked our 1st grader who attends Village Elementary (619-522-8919) and she…

A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.

President Barack Obama says that the same wave of voter anger that swept him into office, swept Massachusetts State Senator Scott Brown into the U. S. Senate. He’s partly right, of course. Voters were angry with Republicans and swept them out of Congress in 2006. Obama capitalized on that voter anger and successfully campaigned on a promise of change.
We got change alright, but not for…

Alicia Blackington is a rare individual. That hasn’t always been a blessing.
For years, the
Coronado native suffered from mysterious ailments that left her with weak limbs and breathless lungs. Twice, she was hospitalized and put on life support. Once, doctors told loved ones that she was on the brink of death. Always, her condition baffled the experts.
Finally, she was diagnosed with Pompe disease, a gradual and often fatal weakening of the muscles controlling…

CORONADO — Senior goalie Colleen Moore and her teammates on the Coronado High girls water polo team completed their semester final exams just before starting the America’s Finest City Invitational.
The Islanders then did more than merely pass their test in the pool.
Call it a perfect score.
With Moore solid in goal, the host Islanders topped El Toro 10-4 for the tournament championship last night, completing a stretch of five victories in as many games over two…
