A commentary by J. F. Kelly, Jr.
Imagine the following scenario. Umar Farouk Abdulmatallab, the Yemini-trained, Nigerian Islamic terrorist accused of attempting to blow up Northwest Flight 253 enroute to Detroit from Amsterdam on Christmas Day, actually succeeds in detonating the explosives sewn into his underwear, destroying the aircraft and killing 278 people on board and perhaps dozens more on the ground. Instead of a collective nationwide sigh of relief, Christmas Day… Continue

This is the window display/image on the corner of 9th and Orange Ave outside Avenue Liquor Store. For some reason, something in this image just looks out of place to me. Plus, it's on a very busy corner along Orange Avenue right next to the Vons entrance where a lot of underage kids walk by. We have plenty of liquor stores in Coronado, but this one seems to stick out more than the others.
Am I being too… Continue

We discovered Coronado last Fall and fell in love with the town and the weather. Since we have moved here we are now in love with the people, the town, and the weather. We are from Steamboat Springs, Co where we have had a candy business for the last 17 years. We left our son and the snow and cold to come here and open our new store.
The store has over 400 varieties of candy as well as a large selection of small toys such as Hello… Continue

CORONADO — All that the homeless dogs and cats in Coronado need before settling into their new, high-end digs is for crews to put the finishing touches on the city’s $2.6 million animal-care facility near San Diego Bay.
When the facility opens — the end of the month is the expected date — it will replace the current animal shelter, a temporary structure built in a parking garage under the Coronado police station.
“We can’t believe it,” said Louis Shirey, president of the… Continue

In what could be considered a landmark ruling on the police use of Tasers, a federal court of appeals issued a strongly-worded judgment this week blaming a Coronado police officer for using excessive force when he shot the device at an unarmed, noncombative motorist during a traffic stop in 2005.
The ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, based in San Francisco, means officers can be held liable for their use of… Continue

Newsflash: Tomorrow is the last day of 2009. That means we’re moving into the first new decade of the 2000s. And we have a decision to make.
Say “2009″ outloud. Chances are you’re saying “two thousand and nine.” But if you think about it, that’s weird. Say “1909″ outloud. Chances are you’re saying “nineteen-oh-nine.” It makes some sense, since we weren’t going to pronounce “2000″ as “twenty hundred,” but for whatever reason, going… Continue

Millions of people have a fear of flying. Although it is, statistically, the safest method of travel mile for mile, the spectacular and catastrophic nature of major plane crashes causes many air travelers to tremble at every bump, vibration and unusual noise. Add to this general sense of disquiet, the tribulations of modern air travel including crowded flights, long lines, Spartan service, truly awful in-flight food, sparse legroom, cramped… Continue

CORONADO, Calif. -- A public vigil will be held in Coronado Wednesday in memory of a woman who was strangled, allegedly by her boyfriend, soon after he was bailed out of jail in connection with a previous incident of domestic violence against her.
Christina Jones, 31, was killed in her Golden Hill apartment Dec. 17 in front of her 4- and 17-month-old children. The children's father, Melvin Carter, 29, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.
The night of the… Continue

The Coronado cop who subdued a traffic violator with a taser may be sued for damages by the boxer-clad, angry young man, a state appellate court has ruled.
The ruling by a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals published Monday involved officer Brian McPherson who had pulled over motorist Carl Bryan for a seat belt infraction in the summer of 2005.
Bryan, 21, is suing in federal court, alleging the use of… Continue

For Coronado head coach Alex Cade, measuring the value of standout senior Kodie Englehart cannot be done by perusing a stat sheet or leader board.
“There’s a lot of guys out there who are good players and put up lots of points,” Cade said. “Everyone outside of the game sees the point totals, but there are also points that no one wants to get.
“If we need a goal, and it’s the last five seconds of the game, in a critical situation,… Continue
