"The Three Stooges" Movie Review at the Coronado Village Theater

The Three Stooges Movie Trailer

On Saturday afternoon, I walked into the beautifully renovated Village Theater on Orange Avenue. After buying some delicious popcorn in the lobby, my friend and I went into the main auditorium to watch a showing of the new “The Three Stooges” movie. Having never seen the original films, I wasn't quite sure what to expect.

.

The movie, directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly, opens with three adorable babies being thrown from a speeding car onto the porch of the Sisters of Mercy orphanage. Their names are Moe, Larry, and Curly. The nuns, played by Larry David, Jennifer Hudson, and Kate Upton; as well as Sister Superior, played by Jane Lynch; instantly compare the three boys to "angels from heaven." Quickly, we fast forward ten years to see that the opposite is actually true -- the sweet babies have grown into crazy, unruly boys with no chance of adoption.

.

In their thirties, the boys still live at the orphanage. Because of financial problems (mainly caused by endless accidents of the trio), the orphanage is forced to close its doors unless they come up with $830,000 by the end of the month. Desperate to make the money, Moe, Larry and Curly leave the orphanage for their first time and set off on an epic adventure to save their childhood home.

.

While in the Big City, they come across Lydia (played by Sofia Vergara), who gives them the opportunity to make the cash they so badly need. The only thing they need to do is kill her husband, Teddy (portrayed by Kirby Heyborne), a former orphan who was adopted into a rich family, so that Lydia can take his money and run off with his best friend.

.

Caught in a complicated murder plot, Moe, Larry and Curly attempt to do as Lydia asked. Unexpectedly, they wind up in all sorts of crazy situations, ranging from trying to give a dolphin the Heimlich maneuver to pretending to be nurses in a hospital. Moe accidentally scores a lead role on the successful reality show Jersey Shore.

.

Overall, I found the endless stapstick comedy to be slightly over the top and redundant. Moviegoer Emily Dow said, “I liked it, but I thought that there could have been a little less physical humor.” However, the dialogue was consistently funny throughout and will make you laugh out loud. I thought that the Farrelly brothers did a great job of expanding short episodes into a feature length film. Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, and the Jersey Shore cast also make appearances in the movie, keeping it modern and funny. My favorite parts were the surprising plot twists at the end, which keep you thinking about the movie long after it's over.

"Over the top"  and  "redundant" !    What a harsh thing to say about three of the most lovable characters in film history.  I have always tried to model myself after Moe.   Thanks for reviewing the movie for us.  I will try to get into character when I visit Coronado.      Pop

Despite your Pop's objection, Sophia, I agree with you.  I always found the stooges to be "over the top", but I like your review because you point out what you liked about the movie and didn't give us the ending!
