The 6th annual Dinner & Auction event held at Coronado High School on Thursday April 19, “Empty Bowls”, was an incredible success!
“In 1990 a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students solve a problem. They were searching for a way to raise funds to support a food drive. What evolved was a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fund raising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup and bread, and were invited to keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world.”
Proceeds from the event benefit the Hunger Project (a hunger relief effort at St. Vincent de Paul Village in downtown San Diego). Last year, the $16,300 donated by CHS, fed 900 people every Sunday for 4 months in San Diego.
This year, CHS’ goal of $18,000 was surpassed, making $19,000 in the first 2 hours alone! This school year, there were 1,280 bowls made for the event-most than in the past years! The bowls are made and donated by CHS ceramics students, Coronado adult education ceramics students, San Diego Potters, and Vista High School students. Leftover bowls are either saved for next year or donated to the La Jolla Methodist Church’s Empty Bowls event.
Along with the $20 dinner and ceramic bowl you get, there is also a silent auction held offering things ranging from fishing trips to golf instructions. The silent auction alone made $5,500 this year!
A look at the past 5 year’s proceeds:
2007: $4,500
2008: $9,000
2009: $9,007
2010: $11,753
2011: $16,350
