Coronado Students and Parents: Prepare for Changes in Your School Commute

The City of Coronado will begin to construct "sidewalk bulbouts" along Third Street at the intersections with F and H Avenues, and along Fourth Street at the intersection with B Avenue.

Work on the project is expected to begin on May 14, 2012, and expected to take several weeks to complete. Construction of the sidewalk bulbouts will require the temporary removal of existing sidewalks and pedestrian ramps at the effected intersections as well as work within each street.

The City recommends that during the construction of the project, for the safety of both pedestrians and motorists, that school staff, parents, and students use alternative routes to school to avoid these three intersections.

City engineering staff is coordinating with the Coronado Police Department to temporarily move the crossing guards from the F Avenue intersection to the G Avenue intersection during this timeframe, and construction signs will be in place directing pedestrians away from the construction.

The bulbouts will increase the amount of sidewalk area at each corner of each intersection by extending the sidewalk three feet into each parking lane. Pedestrian visibility of on-coming traffic will be increased, visibility of pedestrians by motorists will be increased, and the distance a pedestrian must travel in order to cross the street will be decreased.
The City thanks you in advance for your patience and apologizes for any inconvenience this project may cause you.

If you have any questions call Ed Walton, City Engineer, at (619) 522-7385.

Wondering why the city couldn't wait until school is out in 3 1/2 weeks???

Glad to hear this is happening. As a driver, I am appalled when I see cars zipping past pedestrians waiting at corners to cross the street, particularly when I've stopped to allow them to cross. The worst is when the person behind you actually makes a lane change to get by! And yesterday my family were the pedestrians who almost got run over. I want to make photocopies of the page in the driver's manual that explains "invisible crosswalks" to paper airplane into the cars that do this! Pretty much every corner is a crosswalk, people, regardless of whether there are lines painted there!

The timing had to be coordinated with CALTRANS and was chosen to try to get it completed before the big summer crowds.
