Coronado High School Art Students Present First Ever Chalk Festival!

The Visual Art Department at Coronado High School would like to invite you to the first ever Chalk Art exhibit taking place in the quad of the high school tomorrow, Thursday, May 24th, 2012.

Talented high school students will be taking over the quadrangle and producing giant chalk art on the pavement  in a festive environment.

"You will be able to view the making of up to 40 large-scale artworks, live!"

Chalk art has existed for many years, and is referred to in several different ways: street painting, pavement art, street art and side walk chalk -- the latter is likely the most recognizable form of this art and practiced by young kids today.

Using top quality chalk brought in especially for this event, students with a variety of skills will be working together to reproduce oversize renderings of well-known paintings, characters and other works of art resembling those seen on the streets of Italy and other European cultural centers.

This is a sample of the intricate drawings a CHS team of chalk artists will reproduce live at the Chalk Festval.

CHS Art teacher Laura Hill, is the creative force behind this innovative festival incorporating art class students, and giving them a unique opportunity to showcase their abilities in a fun environment.

"There will be plenty of types of art for all ages, from Dr. Seuss and excerpts from "Where The Wild Things Are," to master's renditions and original works," Hill said.

In addition, there will be an interactive area of the quad reserved for younger students where they will be able to play and create their own versions chalk art. Drop by and spend 20 minutes strolling through the open exhibit, and also watch as aspiring young artists produce their own versions of chalk art side-by-side with the high school artists.

The live art exhibit and interactive chalk quad is free and opens only for CUSD schools and their students  from 11am -- 2:30pm this Thursday, May 24th. The public, and parents with their children, are welcome after school from 2:30pm – 5:00pm.

I'm posting this in a blog post as well, but here are (way too many) pictures of the newly created art!
