Yes to Walgreens. No to Starbucks. Why?

The Coronado City Council Coronado Planning Commission just shot down Starbuck's request to open a second location at 135 Orange Avenue due to the competition it would create for two "Mom & Pop" businesses near the location. Tartine and Boney's Bayside Market both run successful coffee businesses that are not chains. Coronado seems to struggle to maintain its quaint small-town feel as bigger business threaten to take over Orange Ave.

So, why is it that a HUGE company like Walgreens was approved and will open its' doors in Coronado soon when Central Drug has been serving Coronado since 1893 as an independently owned neighborhood pharmacy. Why is Walgreens an exception? Upon opening the newest location, Walgreens will be across the street from a competing chain drug store, CVS and both will compete with Central Drug.

One argument for opening a Walgreens that was brought up to me was this: What else would fill that huge, and probably extremely expensive piece of property on Orange Ave besides a large company?

This is a very good point. However, if this is the reasoning behind it, it seems to me that eventually Orange Ave will consist solely of large chain business because that is all that will be able to survive on the expensive real-estate.

What do you think of the decision to open a Walgreens and not allow another Starbucks?

I hate having to travel to the other end of town for Starbucks.  It is popular and overcrowded.  A starbucks on this side of the island would have been great.  Tartines attracts a different type of customer.  Boney's coffee business is really a convenience for customers.  I'm not offended by the Walgreens.  I guess something has to fill that space.  As long as it's unobtrusive.

Good points, Meyer!  Have we heard if Starbucks has appealed the decision, Ashley? We need to be sure to share these comments when it is heard again at the Planning meeting - I hope they haven't given up on us.

Small towns, like ours, which are filled with quaint non-chain businesses are becoming few and far between. Without support (esp. in tough economic times), they will be lost. I love our variety of unique small businesses!!! and applaude the Plannning Comm. for having the guts to do their job. In the long run, you will be glad they did. Not only do these biz give our village a distinctive identity, but they are a refreshing change from the chain businesses that surround us "over the bridge". Starbucks lovers, you got your wish - there is one. If you aren't able to take a walk or ride your bike down the street to get to it once in a while, you might be happier in a different type of neighborhood to begin with. The rules are in place for a reason - they support the style of the community. Don't change one of the things that make it so special - No more cookie-cutter infringement! As for Walgreens: sigh

I guess we can all agree to disagree, but I don't think it warrants suggesting that people move out of town.  Keep in mind that this storefront has been empty for about four years or so which means a considerable amount of lost income for the property owner as well as tax revenue.  I'm not sure what qualifies as a "quaint" business anymore but many of these businesses are owned by people who do not live in Coronado.

As far as Walgreen's goes, I would rather have something in that location that will benefit the greater good overall than another empty building for the next several years. Tough economy plus expensive leases equals large empty spaces!

A quick follow-up on my previous post, as a disabled veterans with 26 years of service I am not happy about Walgreen's not coming to terms with Express Scripts (they stopped filling Express Scripts prescriptions in January) but I still support them opening a store whereever the market will allow it.

Good point, Herbert. Thank you!  The empty spaces at this end of Orange are not helping the crime - which is going up on the 100 & 200 blocks of Orange, either.  Starbucks doesn'

t detract from "quaint" - its not a Denny's or iHop, for cryin' out loud! ;-) And, the detractors have already pooh poohed a trade business, or any food that competes, there's not really much that COULD go in there.  And no one has come to the defense of the property owner, or the fact that the Home Owners Association of that building all signed in favor of it going in right under them - the people that would be most inconvenienced.  And, to point out again, the "rules" in place are that no more than 10 "chains" can be in that area and there are 6, Starbucks would be 7... All very good points helping make the Island a great community where no one has to "move out of town" :-)

As a Coronado resident for the past 54 years I was all for the Starbucks going in. It would bring more people to Boneys and Tartines. I am not a coffee drinker but still thought what a great idea. Not sure who makes what decisions in this town but Thank you Mayor Casey you did a great job explaining it. I was surprised a Wallgreens was allowed when Rite Aide has been here for a long time. This will be interesting. I would have rather seen a mini Target then a Walgreens. Sure miss our Coro-mart. Loved that store.

I have not heard anything regarding Starbucks appealing the decision. I have been told that the City Council can overrule the Planning Commission Decision. All information on meeting schedules are always posted on the city's website!
