Chris Searles sent this photo and these words to eCoronado.com:
Between chalk signage on parking places, putting miniature parking cones in front of the house, and that one guy who pulls out two SDG&E signs from his trunk and leaves them on the curb when he drives off to work in the morning, parking in Coronado is serious business... and the summer is just getting started!
Cheers and here's to good Coronado parking CARma.
Anyone else have this issue going on in their neighborhood?
Comment by mturk2 on June 30, 2012 at 8:34am Concur! However, we shouldn't assume everyone who has an out of state license plate is from out of town...That goes out to the delightful individual who honked at me for not turning quick enough on Orange and 4th yesterday! I'd like to invite you to my house... where I live... as a full-time resident... who has Virginia tags on my car... for dinner! ...Anyone got a spare "92118" sticker? Have a great Fourth!!!!
Comment by Ashley Jenkins on June 30, 2012 at 2:59pm I get that it would be annoying to live in a place where parking is tough but at the same time where is there public parking for people on the island for more than two hours? All the meters are limited to two hours. That leaves the Ferry landing and residential parking. For people who work at the other end of the island there are no options besides street parking.
Just something you have to deal with when living in a gorgeous place like Coronado!

Comment by Jamie Edmonds on July 1, 2012 at 8:33am If you've seen the little blue and white "car2go" cars over in San Diego the operating area does not yet currently extend into Coronado, but they are working on it. In studies to date, every car2go takes about 8-15 other cars off the road as people give up their own or second car to use a car share for commuting or the occasional trip over the bridge. They are only 35¢ per minute of rental time which includes all costs: the insurance, registration--even the fuel! They are all electric (quiet and clean!), but these aren't golf carts, they are made by Daimler with a solid roll cage and six airbags (and the speed is governed at 65mph). Park them on the street in San Diego for free and just walk away--when you need one again at the end of the day/errand/event, whip out your smartphone and it'll route you to the nearest one (usually no more than a block or two away). Imagine if all the people who drive their cars to work in Coronado (or to San Diego from here) left a car2go on the street and while they were at work, the car was used by dozens of others for short trips around town instead of one car sitting useless and hogging that one valuable spot all day. They are small enough to be parked two to a spot which could maximize Coronado's limited parking spaces. You can even reserve them by location so they would be there when you need.
If you'd like to find out more about the possibilities of car sharing and other electric vehicles for Coronado, there will be a free informational forum on July 10th at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort at 11:00. The event will include a free lunch if you RSVP here:

Comment by Candace Tyler on July 2, 2012 at 11:01am The meters along Isabella go up to 8 hours and the spaces even further toward Ocean Blvd. have no meters.
I live at 5th and Pomona and hate schlepping my groceries from around the corner because a vacation renter on Adella Lane is parked in front of my house...for days! I thought all rental properties on the lanes had to provide parking spaces...true or not?
Comment by Jim Rohn on July 2, 2012 at 11:19am incorrect forum for spam about the rental cars IMHO ...
As a resident and homeowner for 59 years I would like to add my "2 cents"...Parking is an issue in Coronado. I do not have a garage and only two spaces in front of my home. My street requires a permit. Personally I am tired of not being able to park in front of my home. It is like a magnet for other people to pull in as soon as we move a vehicle that doesn't have a permit, is from out of town or using a visitor pass as they think it is as good as a "permit". They stay for days and then leave before you can do anything about it! My neighbors rent their "second home"...they live at The Shore to their "guests" for short periods of time...hmmm... People rent out their alley "guest" houses to hoards of people with many vehicles and so they don't have ANY parking! So your home is a parking lot for many, many people. We should have "rights" as we pay to maintain the streets curbs, etc. Just my opinion and I also would like to know...what are the rules for alley rentals with no parking!!!! OR "guests" that party for a few days and leave...can't prove they are paying rent and not really "guests"...but if you live next door...YOU KNOW!!!!
Comment by Story R. Vogel on July 2, 2012 at 9:43pm From my perch in the Mountain Empire, I smile as I consider the age old prolbem of parking in Coronado. Years ago the Parking Permit program was instituted between 3rd and 4th from Orange to Alameda. As I recall, folks who couldn't park on the base for whatever reason were parking between 3rd and 4th. In areas where the R1B zone bumped up against R3 (multiple families), there was always the parking problem.
Now it has been exacerbated by the Newport Beaching of Coronado. Where single familes homes once stood in the R1B zone, you get two Billy Boxes. In the R3 zone, where a single family home stood on a 50 ft lot, you have 4 "Tony's Tenements". Take a look at D Avenue between 4th and 5th...........single family homes torn down and if my math s correct, 12 Tony's Tenements replacing those home and an old apartment building, Or look at my former street , the 300 block of D. Where there were six single family homes, and one 1940's apartment building 27 homes (Billy Boxes and Condos) replaced them..
When you jam so many housing units onto a block you are bound to have conflict as , .fewer people use their garages, each household has more cars etc..
Eventually a parking permit system for all neighborhoods impacted by busines employees, tear downs and the densification of Coronado will have to be considered, I would think.
Gee, I hope so. They also are required one 1st and 2nd now. I counted 17 rentals, including converted garages to illegal rentals in a one-half block stretch from F to G. I counted only 4 owner occupied homes in the same area...in one-half block!!! We voted a few years back to repeal the current FAR density and WON by 3 votes only to have the City overrule the vote...huh??? The people spoke and were NOT heard. The new Coronado folk move here because they "love" it soooo much and then all they do is tear down the existing home, instead of restoring it...some because they NEED more space...then buy somehwere else!!! The City of Carmel had the right idea...no changing the FAR density and restore the home...it actually "raises" the property value as it is basic supply and demand...you want to live there, you pay the price and it is much more expensive because "less is more" as the saying goes! I don't know what the answer is, since our vote didn't count!! As a closing story...we had a new neighbor call the Fire Department because we were smoking some fish my husband caught and they said our house was on fire...they didn't like the smoke...and they think we are petty for wanting to park in front of our home!! Someone could have died that really needed those emergency services!!!!
