Year after year, Coronado loses more public transportation. This year bus route 904 was completely eliminated on Sundays. Now, the city council has approved to further study the voluntary removal of 6 bus stops along Orange Avenue at 5th, 7th and 9th streets.

If we continue to say nothing, they will continue to consolidate until nothing is left!

Residents, Workers and Visitors please write today to show your support for public transportation in Coronado!

TELL CITY COUNCIL how you value the bus routes 901 and/or 904. Do you use it for Padres games, commuting, theatre, shopping, errands, school, jury duty, out of necessity or just for fun? If you don't use it, do you know a family, friend or neighbor that relies on the bus for mobility and independence?

Instead of eliminating the public transportation because of loss of revenue, why not advertise--put some $$ into advertising and possibly ridership will increase. Advertise on the internet, the Eagle, public TV---
also how about decreased fares for a month and see if that helps. The same situation occurred in DC with one of the bus lines (Georgetown Connection) and next thing you know, they were back, had decreased fares for a few weeks and-voila- ridership improved.

Right on Mary! Stimulating sustainable demand outspeaks rhetoric and begging!
Anyone have a link to ridership info on 910/904?

Thanks for your comments Mary and John! The last city council agenda notes online have the ridership info for both routes. But as most of us know, numbers can be manipulated to support either arguement. This is why I need everyone to show support for the buses verbally and in written form to the council. There are empty seats but it doesn't diminish the value of serving the people that NEED IT. And how can we increase ridership now and in the future when they keep making it more difficult to ride.

I just used the 901 after dropping my big truck in Miramar to get some engine work done; I'll use it again to pick it up. I also used the 901 to commute back north from IB when I leave my truck in our yard in Otay because there is no truck parking allowed on Coronado streets. My daughter and her friends use the 901 when she visits from Australia to shop at the Outlet Center in Otay and when they go to downtown San Diego. I ask you to SUPPORT public transportation in San Diego and Coronado. Don't eliminate bus routes or stops; encourage them. Why is this City Council against public transportation in Coronado?

well, there you go Jef- you are the perfect example of Coronado citizens NEEDING to use public transportation. what a shame that it is expected that people have a car, two cars, whatever -to get where they need to go....much less the extra $$ for ridiculous gas prices, parking meters and car insurance

Well said Mary. We need as much support as possible. I have been educating myself on SANDAG and MTS and these cuts are only the beginning for Coronado if we don't speak out now. I need as many letters and emails sent this month to our ONLY advocate for public transportation on the city council, Barbara Denny at bdenny@coronado.ca.us. THANK YOU

Plain and simple...we must have decent public transportation! I'm trying to save gas and be a responsible citizen by leaving my own car home more often and taking public transportation! Please please don't take this away! It's already cut back so far it's hard to get places!!

Jef there is ridership info in the last agenda on the city of coronado site...
The public transportation issues are at the end starting around page 267. It is an interesting read. The ridership survey is composed of two weeks in Aug09 for route 901 and only ONE DAY in April09 for route 904 . Need I say more....plus you can see where people board but not where they get off. But my understanding is they are doing a new survey??? And I hope that it would be more realistic. In any case, this should NOT be a # issue. We are not a city like San Diego with alternative routes on adjacent streets. Most people do not live on Orange Avenue so we are already walking upto 8 or 12 blocks just to get to Orange and then we have to walk that back home later.

I think most people arrive to Coronado via ferry or car. It would be nice to have a local bus to help visitors and residences move around the island from ferry to beach to orange. How about a trolley like the old days?

I ride the bus to the Padres games & back, it's the best way to go. I ride my bike to Imperial Beach & all around to the bridge & take the bus home. Many times I cruise down to IB on bike & put it on the bus for a fun & easy way home. Many people riding on it need all the bus stops & they need to stay.
Less cars & more buses, would be great! Would love to ride it to & from airport instead of taxi, maybe next time if we can pack light.
