Police Say Alberto Avilla Struck Officer With Broom

SAN DIEGO -- A well-known street artist whose artwork has been a fixture around Coronado was jailed after he used one of the tools of his trade against a police officer.

Alberto Avilla, known in and around Coronado as the "Sandman" for his creative drawings using sand, was arrested last Thursday after he was caught riding his bike in the business district, which is prohibited in the city of Coronado.

It is never okay to strike an officer, but if you've ever talked to the Sandman -- well, he is a little different, and probably did not really understand what was going on. I also question the need for him to be cited in the first place for riding his bike. A warning should have been enough. I see people (mostly kids and tourists) ALL THE TIME riding their bikes in the business district and on the sidewalks and I have yet to see the police do anything about it. It is a nightmare for pedestrians dodging bikes, and drivers dodging jaywalkers. I avoid it as much as possible in the summer now.  :(

Wow--maybe instead of arresting him, the CPD should have staged another "suicide." This same policewoman gave me a ticket for turning left where it was not prohibited. Her traffic sargeant acknowledged her error, but I still had to miss work, sit in court all day, provide photos and video to have it dismissed! CPD is a joke.

Since when is bike riding in Coronado prohibited?  I used to see bike riding constantly.  Is this a rule since I moved away in August?
