Coronado Power Outage in Tweets & Photos

Reminder, you can sign up to get 'emergency alerts' from the county San Diego.  We received one regarding the blackout that was very timely.  Here is the link:  http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/oes/ready/signup.html

Kris Hanson snapped this 'blackout' photo of downtown San Diego from a very dark Coronado.

From impromptu block parties, to playing boardgames in a candlelit room, Coronado residents kept great attitudes during a massive blackout that knocked out power for up to 5 million people in California, Arizona and Mexico.  We did hear some 'negative blackout comments' from NFL fans that missed watching the opening season game and folks that wanted to try out Nicky Rottens - yesterday was opening day for them!  The power was out from around 3:30pm to 11:45pm on 9/9/11.

I'd like to thank Island Liquor and Avenue Liquor Stores for remaining open while Vons and Albertsons immediately locked up their stores like scared little girls. Boney's also remained open for the first hour - thanks Boney's. The stores only accepted cash and polite customers were lined up. My husband was short a couple of dollars, but Avenue Liquor let him have his ice anyway. Now, that's community - and we will drop by today and pay the extra dollars. Had the blackout lasted for several days, those small stores would be considered heroes while the big corporate stores would be letting FEMA do their work while filing for disaster relief.

I think there should be a mandatory blackout two times a month for 8 hours! What a stress reliever. Got to watch the stars, hear the neighborhood kids play flashlight tag, talk to my hubby for an hour straight with no interuptions, and just enjoyed the calmness of it all on our little island. Wouldn't it be nice to save some electricity and plan these once in a while?

I agree with you, Gerin!  The house was so beautifully quiet sans the usual electrical hum.  Instead, the was abuzz with family activity. The boy lighting the house with candles, hubby warming soup by camping headlight, sharing stories with neighbors, families hosting loved ones and friends escaping the east county heat, houses full of laughter and love.

All-in-all - I'd call last night serene.

Let's do it - Coronado Calm - on a regularly scheduled basis

...might just institute that in my house ... what do you think, Mr. Mayor?

Could be worthy of a Proclamation :-)

Dawn, I think that's a wonderful idea -- Coronado Luddite Nights!

We came in from the beach and showered by flashlight, made salads, lit candles and just talked and talked... and watched the truly unique dark skyline.  What a treat!  Why does it take an "emergency" to make us appreciate simple things?

That is a great idea! Wouldn't it be wonderful if we all did it. Go outside. Interact with your neighborhood. Now if our illustrious Mayor got behind the idea it could happen. Imagine how nice it would be. Dawn you said it perfectly. Coronado Calm. A night of Serenity...
