My son and I were coming home and were a few cars back...far enough that I could distract him so he didn't know what was going on. But, people all around us were, well, out of their car and nearly celebrating. "he jumped!" "did you see it"? I can't get out of my head how excited folks were. My son wouldn't have known what happened but we could hear what people around us were saying...even with our windows closed. He asked if someone jumped and we had to have a discussion that I didn't want to have. When we came over the bridge we saw the police going through his car. It was very sad in so many ways. I suppose it gave my 11 year old son and I an opportunity to discuss suicide and I am thankful that we had a good discussion about it. What I can't get out of my head is the excited spectators on the bridge.

So sad.

We too were going over the bridge (The other direction) when he was pacing. My daughter who is 12 asked what was going on which brought up suicide. It is sad that people feel that they have nobody to turn to. I asked her what he may have thought was so awful in life that he couldn't handle. It was very interesting to hear what she thinks is so drastic. You may want to ask as well, I learned.

A life ends in a sad, terrible act of desperation and people turn it into a spectator sport. How depressing is that? Shame on them.

It's the times we live in.  But it's also no faith...in God or whomever is your higher power.  To me suicide is a sin.  It's also a coward's way out.  I feel even being struck with a medical situation is no reason to suicide.  We have to teach our children that no matter what, prayer and thankfulness is the blessing we have to get thru live,  whatever we are hit with. Teach them to pray that a person whould stand up and help those who want to end it all.  There's usually someone, though you don't have a name in your prayer God knows who it is.

We have lost our sense of compation and morals. That young man obviously had problems. Suicide is a permanant solution to to temporary problem. There is ALWAYS HOPE and there is ALWAYS HELP. People need to reach out for that hope and help that is out there.

This man was someones son or maybe someones father. Let's hope that none of the people that cheered or the ones that yell to people to just jump never have the feeling this man must have had to end his life so tragically. Let's hope you never get "the call" that tells you your loved one killed themselves. Trust me, it's very devistating.

It's completely unacceptable for people to behave in such a way.  As often as this happens I have no idea why we don't have suicide nets on that bridge.  Oh wait, yes I do, it's because it wouldn't be as "pretty".  Millions of dollars might be spent to light up the bridge in a beautiful manner (if that project is still being talked about).  Awesome... now more people can commit suicide at night.  I'd rather have the nets.  Coronado is ranked the 7th most popular bridge to commit suicide on... in the WORLD.  You don't read that in travel and tourism literature.

Depression is not a sin as mentioned above.  Wow.  Katie, Pamela and Melissa above, I agree with you.  This is truly very sad and could have been prevented with proper support and help.  Some people don't know where to turn or they don't have the resources to get professional help and guidance.

Where's the admonishments to the person who caused the public spectacle in the first place.  For some reason, posters want to overlook who was really responsible for the mayhem caused that day.  I think it is rude and selfish to commit, or attempt to commit, suicide in such a public important place like the Coronado Bridge.  Suicide should be a personal choice done alone and in private where your actions don't negatively impact so many good people.  Now the BIG question:  How many of you posters that criticized the public reactions have donated their time/money/efforts to prevent suicide?  Maybe we ALL need to volunteer our resources to make a difference in these troubled souls that contemplate suicide

Admonishment? You have admonishment for a person suffering? Rude and selfish? It SHOULD be done and private? All I can say is wow. My guess is those that care about others do help in all ways that they can. Mental illness and or depression is not something someone chooses to have. It's the same as cancer or diabetes or any other host of diseases. It's the 21st century --- time to evolve into aiding and assisting and supporting all those who have ANY type of disease instead of criticizing them and telling they cause mayhem.
