This is a red flag worthy of our attention.

At my request as a Coronado city councilwoman -- and with the unanimous support of my colleagues on city council -- city staff is working on ways to increase citizens' emergency preparedness and disaster relief skills by increasing citizen participation in our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Coronado Emergency Radio Operators (CERO), Neighborhood Watch and the Coronado schools.

Keep your eyes open for the next opportunity for you to become more prepared for the inevitable disaster, natural or man-made, which reputable experts say is overdue in our area.

My goal is for Coronado to be a shining success story of a community that comes together and can handle any emergency or disaster that life throws our way.

Thanks for your comment Barbara. I'd love to see a page or section on the City website that gives more information and contact points on what to do in case of an emergency. If CERT has plans for certain major disasters, can those be published? I see a list of names on the site, but no contact information. Basically, I think publicizing the plan before we need it would be very helpful information to have. Perhaps I'm missing it if it's already on there, but after looking at this link, I couldn't find the details: http://www.coronado.ca.us/department/division.php?fDD=8-55 (We will be happy to publish any information the City sends us to better educate and prepare the community of Coronado).

You're welcome, Steve. Thank you for all you do to keep Coronado informed.

I expect to have more information for you soon as I hear back from city staff regarding ways to increase citizen participation in emergency preparedness and disaster relief.

Meanwhile, eCoronado readers can go to www.barbaratdenny.com to learn about the next $25 CPR class to be held on Tuesday 23 March 2010 and the free spring CERT class series beginning Wed 19 May 2010.

I urge all eCoronado readers to call the Fire Department business number at 619-522-7374 to reserve your seat for CERT and CPR classes now.

Remember, safety first and always.
