Parents of incoming Transitional and Traditional Kindergarten students in the Coronado Unified School District have the opportunity to bring their children to be assessed before school begins on August 15-17, 2012. These assessments will be held at both the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC) of Village Elementary and at Silver Strand Elementary. Information from the assessment will help each school make appropriate classroom placements for the 2012-13 school year and help meet students’ needs from the very first day of school. Each child will be assessed by one of our Coronado Unified School District teachers in order for us to gain valuable information about a child’s reading and math readiness.  Preregistered students will be receiving via US Mail a postcard indicating how to arrange for an appointment.  New families who have not preregistered should contact the ECDC (522-8923) or Silver Strand Elementary (522-8934) for an appointment.

The assessment will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, while parents wait nearby for their child in a designated area. Parents will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire which will be used for classroom placements along with the information gained from the assessment. As parents are the first and most important teachers of their children, they have valuable information that can assist CUSD in meeting student needs. Administration and teachers will use the information to make appropriate balanced classroom placements. Parents may not request a particular teacher.

The information from the before school placement assessment and other assessments given at the beginning of the school year will be available only during parent teacher conferences, which will be scheduled during the first three weeks of school--August 23, 2012 through Friday, September 14, 2012. Parents will receive specific information regarding parent teacher conferences once school begins from their child’s teacher. During this conference period, Kindergarten students are dismissed at 11:45 am at Silver Strand Elementary and 11:50 am at the ECDC. Full day Kindergarten will begin on Monday, September 17, 2012.

Specific Transitional and Traditional classroom placements will be available at Kindergarten Orientations scheduled for Wednesday, August 22 at 10:30 am at both school sites.  Students and parents will be able to meet their new teacher and briefly visit the classroom in preparation for the first day of school.
