Why are the lights on the Bridge being left on 24/7? Seems like quite a waste of energy.
Also, on the subject of Bridge lighting, what ever happened to the proposal to light up the undeside of the Bridge?

Comment by Mayor Casey Tanaka on May 24, 2012 at 7:10pm I don't know why Caltrans is leaving the lights on all day on the Bridge, but I suspect they have them on a timer.
The Bridge Lighting project is a Port of San Diego project and they have also made it clear that they do not want to pay for this project. They are hoping that the funds can be raised privately. I have not heard any updates on those fund raising efforts, but it does not appear to be gaining fund raising momentum.
Comment by Jim Rohn on May 28, 2012 at 3:11pm seems like they could use the savings for another project if the difference between turning them on and off and leaving them on all the time amounts to anything ...
Comment by MIKE GAPP on May 28, 2012 at 6:30pm Respectfully - Why is everyone so attached to underlighting the bridge again? Not enough fossil fuels burning or nuclear reactors leaking already?
It seems like the wildlife in the Bay is beat up enough - excess light is POLLUTION, just as much as heavy metals.
We should be turning lights off, not on.

Comment by Mary on June 2, 2012 at 7:35am Speaking of the bay being beat up, how about the summer full of fireworks the bay and residents are about to be subjected to almost every night? What about the birds, wildlife, and domestic animals? What about the loud fireworks on our beach that the Hotel seems to be able to access whenever it pleases?
Comment by Jim Rohn on June 2, 2012 at 8:45am Not to be disrespectful, but are you suggesting that the "loud" aircraft be disposed of as well? What about the street & sidewalk lights? After all, they are a daily occurrence.
It is a shame that anything we do can be turned into a detriment for other living things.
<exaggeration mode on>
Maybe we should just tear down all the buildings on Coronado and plant native plants and trees, then no one can be blamed for endangering the native wildlife ...

there is a happy medium that doesn't rely on extremes ... some view us not living in caves as progress

There certainly is, I agree - but remember also that your "medium" literally means in the middle of the extremes you are speaking about.
- By logical extension, we must go to more extremes before that "happy medium" shifts to accommodate public opinion in whatever that new "middle" is, and then we are being ruled by the Mob.
And there be dragons.
- That isn't opinion, that is documented fact.
- One needs only look at how practically unregulated some potentially deadly technologies are used with relatively reckless abandon that one would expect more of childless lower primates than men and women of conscience;
- Such as those antennae arrays over the fire department that are probably knocking little pieces out of every fireman's DNA (just ignore those higher cancer rates, those can be explained while we carry on), not to mention the kids in public school that are too close within the energy attenuation range of the same; - There are many other examples of health hazards and poor environmental practices, disguised as public policy, safety, and progress, here in town, and elsewhere out in the county, state, and country. - I won't go into those because I am not a crusader for lost causes, but I will call them like I see them, when having friendly discourses with my fellow Coronadoans.
.......
One can argue that street lights are or are not necessary, but until we take up residence underwater in the bay and establish some precedent for a right to live there, I don't think any of your examples of land use show a parallel to unnatural ( - particularly) lights over the bay, which have a proven and profound effect on wildlife therein.
So the middle doesn't move without extremes present. Maintaining the "happy medium" is called counterproductive these days as a fashion trend more than a scientific observation, but there is an old term for that midpoint that I prefer;
It's called a Standard.
LOL.
Oh well. continue to burn Mayberry down, folks.
Hope is Progress after all, and who will notice the next waste of money, be it on the top of the bridge or the bottom of it, on top of all that harmless Japanese irradiated flotsam heading to a beach near you.
- BTW - I couldn't help but reckon the Japanese think living in caves doesn't looks so bad now.
Respectfully submitted, and thinking happy thoughts,
Mike Gapp
