CORONADO, Calif. -- A public meeting over a proposal to put a restroom on the beach near the Hotel del Coronado became heated on Wednesday. Lew Barnum has lived at the Coronado Shores complex for 43 years and said he enjoys the current view.
"It's absolutely beautiful and it's never going to be compromised," said Barnum.
However, it may change. The city wants to put a public restroom on the west of the hotel and next to Coronado Shores. The proposal caused a big stink in a public meeting on Wednesday.

People complained about the view being wrecked by the lifeguard building, but in the end it was much ado about nothing. I've used the bathrooms at Central and North Beaches, and they've never been smelly, in fact, I would rate them better than any of San Diego's public restrooms on the beach or in Balboa Park.
I hope the restroom gets built and I hope they have an outdoor shower like the other beach restrooms in town.

Comment by TR on January 12, 2012 at 5:30pm Lew Barnum go back to sleep....the view was ruined when the Shores was built...go across to Cabrillo National Park on Pt Loma and you'll get a taste of the eyesore...those that no what it looked like prior realize how selfish Barnum is.
Comment by Brian on January 12, 2012 at 6:12pm I agree TR. The Shores buildings are eyesores in and of themselves. When you look at the Coronado skyline everything looks so beautiful...until you get to the 70's era architectural monstrocities that are the Shores. Ironic that many of the people complaining about the restrooms being eyesores live in eyesores themselves.
Comment by TR on January 12, 2012 at 7:10pm Brian I hate to say it, but they look as bad as some of Miami's worst ...not one thing is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
Comment by Stephanie Abbott on January 13, 2012 at 8:34am I try not to see the Shores when I come over the bridge. Thank goodness they weren't allowed to build any more.
Comment by Lynne Harpst Koen on January 17, 2012 at 8:59am TR is spot on.
I'm all for a bathroom. If you're down on that end of the beach it's a haul to go up to the Del to use the restroom. Unless the shores would like to put a restroom on the ground floor of one of their buildings and open it for public access!
Comment by Kathy Williams Campbell on January 17, 2012 at 12:17pm The Coronado Shores are horrendous eyesores. I had them removed from a beach family portrait we had professionally done. Go ahead and put a bathroom on that stretch of beach. Couldn't make it any worse.
