Coronado High School Octagon Club to Host Don't Fry Day on May 25th

The Coronado High School Octagon Club, sponsored by the Optimist Club of Coronado, is organizing a community-wide skin cancer awareness and sun safety education program and fundraiser.  During the month of May, Skin Cancer Awareness Month, our club will be working with local schools, dermatologists and community organizations, actively educating the Coronado community on the dangers and preventative methods of skin cancer.

A fundraising event benefiting skin cancer prevention and education in the Coronado community is planned for Friday May 25, 2012.  The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, a united voice to reduce skin cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality, through awareness, prevention, early detection, research, and advocacy (visit their website here) declares the Friday before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day”.  Our 1st Annual “Don’t Fry Day” event will take place at the Brian Bent Memorial Complex.   There will be pool activities, games, prizes, opportunity drawings, sun safe products and food for sale. This event is open to the public.  Admission is $5.00 per person and includes 1 complimentary raffle ticket.  Everyone is invited to participate in supporting this great cause!

May 1-20th a coloring contest will be held for children 10 and under.  The coloring sheets feature fun, sun safe animals promoting sun basics –Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap!   Slip on a shirt (Protect your skin with clothing), slop on sunscreen (Use a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher), slap on a hat (Wear a wide brim - your ears, neck and face get a lot of sun) and wrap on the sunglasses.  The categories will be divided by age groups and judged by the CHS Octagon students.  All entries will be displayed around the pool deck on May 25th. The winners of the coloring contest will receive a sun safe gift bag and will be announced at the “Don’t Fry Day” fundraiser. Coloring sheets will be available at local schools and businesses.
