Coronado Historical Association: Discover America's Gems- Symposium May 31

Preservation Month in May is an annual project promoted by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This year the national theme is Discover America’s Gems. On May 31, in conjunction with the national celebration, three Coronado organizations are co-sponsoring a symposium designed to foster preservation: Discover Coronado’s Gems.

Coronado's Historic Resource Commission, the Coronado Historical Association, and Coronado MainStreet will host a free, two-hour symposium with guest speakers and staff from the City, CHA and MainStreet. This event will showcase

Coronado's architectural gems, educate attendees on the benefits of preservation in our community, and assist those interested in historic designation of their properties.

Presenters include: Vonn Marie May, a cultural landscape specialist with expertise in historic preservation, who has authored several successful National

Register nominations, which include historical landscapes and settings; Doug St. Denis and Chris Ackerman, A.I.A., architects and historic preservation specialists; and Tricia Olsen, Associate Planner and staff member of the Historic Resource Commission, City of Coronado.

Attendees will learn about the new City handbook on applying for historic designation and see a demonstration of the new Flickr site, which showcases all of the existing properties already historically designated in Coronado.

The symposium will take place in the Lecture Hall at the Coronado Museum of History & Art on Thursday evening, May 31, from 6-8 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided by CHA’s Culinary Arts Committee. There is no admission fee for this event but reservations are required because of limited seating.
