Surf's Up Studios interviewed Dina Shacknai before and after her appearance at City Council on Tuesday, September 18th, 2012.
Returning to the city that she said was her son’s favorite place to be, Dina Shacknai made an emotional appeal Tuesday to the Coronado City Council to conduct its own review of the investigation into the 6-year-old’s death last year at the beachfront Spreckels mansion owned by her ex-husband.
Shacknai, who lives in Arizona but has a vacation home in Coronado, appeared before the council during the public comments session, during which members of the public can address council members for three minutes.

Personally, I – and a lot of my friends and neighbors -- agree with Ms. Shacknai in regard to reopening the case into the death of her son Max. The City of Coronado should do anything and everything possible to see to it that this case is investigated properly. Yet with that being stated, if a new investigation is granted, my concern then is that the Coronado Police Department will fumble this case further than it has already managed to do in the past, so possibly by hiring a professional investigator would help get to the true facts of the case.
So what is the most important matter here? I believe that it is giving Max Shacknai a voice, it’s the right thing to do.
Comment by Elizabeth Peterson on September 25, 2012 at 3:09am This is horrendous. How can the police and law enforcement dismiss this case, and this mother's appeal. I have never alligned with the police in this case. Someone has to dig in to this case and bring to light the reasons for all the discrepincies in this sad case. I hope the mother continues to be vigilant.

It is my belief that you are so absolutely right in your posting. The past investigators of this death (Coronado Police & SD Sheriff) have -- without any doubt whatsoever -- appear to be sciolist. Furthermore, the Coronado Police Department -- with their histronics -- have always had a really tough time attempting to even solve the thefts of stolen bikes and iPhones, let alone these deaths and the surrounding circumstances.
As a footnote, and not to turn this into a "political discussion," yet I do wish that -- even one -- of the candidates for the upcoming mayoral/city council election -- along with Coronado residents -- would do more than "not-rock-the-boat" with their pro-Coronado Police opines.
Comment by Elizabeth Peterson on September 26, 2012 at 4:55am The national media needs to take over this case. It seems the father of this child gave up way too easily. And now they want to tear down this mansion? Coronado police has it's priorities way too mixed up. If this were Joe six-pack instead of a millionaire's son the outcome would be very different, I'm afraid. The poor mother needs to know that there are others not only interested, but outraged by her plight. I'm coming back from Australia in January, and would join any group willing to pursue...
