Coronado Unified School District Implements Transitional Kindergarten for 2012-13

Coronado Unified School District proudly announces a tremendous opportunity to give our youngest kindergarteners a better start in school, beginning with the 2012-13 school year. Transitional Kindergarten (TK) will provide the early foundations for school success for those children turning 5 years old early in the school year. The first year of a two-year kindergarten experience, Transitional Kindergarten provides a connection between preschool and traditional kindergarten.  TK will be offered at both Silver Strand Elementary and Village Elementary School at the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC).

For those “young fives”, the program creates a bridge between early learning and kindergarten. The program uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate and completely aligns with the instructional program in preschool-grade 12. It will include all components of the traditional kindergarten curriculum, including computer lab, visual and performing arts, science lab, physical education, and library. Services provided to students in K-12 are also provided to Transitional Kindergarten such as special education and English Learner services. The TK staff includes trained credentialed teachers who are early childhood specialists and understand the unique needs of our youngest kindergarten students.

Because of a new California law, those children whose fifth birthday falls between November 2 and December 2, 2012 must enroll in Transitional Kindergarten for the 2012-13 school year. Parents of a child whose fifth birthday falls before November 2 who feel placement in Transitional Kindergarten meets the needs of the child, may enroll their children in Transitional Kindergarten by completing a required continuance form for Early Admission to Transitional Kindergarten, thus agreeing to a two-year kindergarten experience for their child. New student registration for both schools begins on Thursday, August 9, 2012.  

The daily schedule for Transitional Kindergarten students will align with the traditional kindergarten schedule during the morning only in the fall trimester. During the winter trimester, students will attend a full day of school half of the week while the other half of the week they will attend for the morning only. All students will gradually increase to a full day of school for the spring trimester in preparation for traditional kindergarten. CUSD’s Child Care Program will be available before and after the TK school day for those families needing this service.
