CORONADO — San Diego’s Board of Port Commissioners voted July 12 to delay the decision on Coronado Yacht Club’s renovation and expansion plans, hoping that the extra time will allow for a compromise to be reached on questions about public access to the private club’s waterfront area.

Big Plans — Coronado Yacht Club expansion plans would add 108 boat slips and increase the waterside dock area, along with expanding the clubhouse and junior sailing facility.

“I think this is a good project: good for the organization, good for the city, good for Glorietta Bay and good for the environment,” said San Diego Board of Port Commissioners vice chairman and Coronado representative Lou Smith. “Once more, we reached this point of going forward, and we still have disagreement. It’s a part of our process.”

The disagreement stems from the California Coastal Commission stating that the club’s plans to wrap the public walkway around the proposed Coronado YC building instead of along the waterfront impede public access.

The Board of Port Commissioners staff recommended that port commissioners hold off on approving the $13.2 million project’s Environmental Impact Report and Port Master Plan Amendment for 60 days, while they discuss the public access issue with the Coastal Commission staff, in an attempt to reach a compromise.
