Councilmember Denny attends "Survivors Teaching Students" Presentation for third year medical students at UCSD

Coronado City Councilmember BARBARA DENNY recently attended a presentation of the “Survivors Teaching Students” (STS) Program for third year medical students at UCSD School of Medicine. She was able to witness the great impact ovarian cancer survivors are affecting on medical students, nursing students and practicing physicians in San Diego County. The STS Program is the flagship program of the Ovarian Cancer Advocacy Alliance (OCAA) of San Diego under the sponsorship of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA). PEG FORD, Coronado resident is Chair, OCAA, who launched the all volunteer program in late 2009 and happily reports her team has reached 1,767 attendees in 61 presentations—one of the top team efforts in the country!

Peg Ford is to be the keynote speaker at Scripps 32nd Annual Oncology Nurses Symposium, Hilton San Diego Resort, October 7-10, 2012. Her topic, Ovarian Cancer: The Silent Killer—NOT ANYMORE, will be presented at the Opening Dinner Symposium on October 7. Registration is open and more details can be found at Scripps following link  http://scripps.org/events/oncology-nurses-symposium

September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. In honor this year, Ovarian Cancer Advocacy Alliance (OCAA) is participating in a team effort TEAM SAN DIEGO to support the outstanding efforts of the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (www.ovariancancer.org). OCNA does a tremendous amount of work for women with ovarian cancer. This September OCAA will be participating in a special event a virtual walk called Teal Strides Across America. The Alliance wants to raise $22,000 in honor of the 22,000 women who will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year. Thank you, Peg Ford.  I was moved by the powerful Survivors Teaching Students (STS) presentation at UCSD.  The strong women who survived ovarian cancer volunteered to share their personal stories in order to save the lives of other women.  And the UCSD medical students were exceptionally bright and receptive to the personal stories of the cancer survivors.  Your STS program is very successful.

For eCoronado readers, Peg Ford is a National Patient Advocate, whose leadership resulted in the STS program at UCSD as well as 10 area nursing schools.
