Emergency Warning Siren Test--This IS ONLY a Test!

Some of you may have read in the Weekly Update about the upcoming emergency siren test on May 5th. There was a typo and it should have said Wednesday, May 5th. Sorry for any confusion, but if you hear the sirens going off at 09:00 am on Wednesday, the 5th of May, don't worry--it's only a test.

-------------------------------------------------------

The City of Coronado will test the emergency warning sirens on Wednesday, May 5, at approximately 9 a.m. The entire test is scheduled to take approximately 10 minutes. The sirens are being tested to be ready to alert everyone in the event of an emergency.

THIS IS ONLY A TEST!

The City of Coronado has three sirens to alert the community in the event of a disaster. The sirens are located at the Main Fire Station at Sixth Street and D Avenue, Glorietta Bay Park (south of the boat launch ramp), and at the Cays Fire Station at Coronado Cays Boulevard and Grand Caribe Causeway. Coronado’s Emergency Siren System was designed to alert the community in the event of a disaster or potential disaster, so people can tune into the San Diego County Emergency Alerting System (KOGO 600 AM radio) and receive accurate and timely information on what steps they should take during the emergency.

What to Expect During a Real Emergency

In the event of an impending disaster or after a disaster, the City will activate the emergency warning sirens if it is important to provide instructions to the community about what to do in response to the emergency. The sirens will be activated for an extended period of time, and will make an extended horn-like sound similar to the old civil defense sirens. The volume of sound emitted from the sirens may vary based on your proximity to the sirens. Nevertheless, the sirens will be activated for several minutes at a time.

What to Do During a Real Emergency

Stay in your home, office or hotel room, unless told differently by the Fire or Police Department.

Tune your RADIO to KOGO 600 AM, the Emergency Broadcast Channel.

Turn on your television and wait for the Emergency Broadcast Message that will come across the upper portion of the television.

Have your home emergency kit close at hand.

Did the Cays test their siren too? I'm in Silver Strand and had to really strain to hear anything...I'd be lucky to even notice it. :-(
