Coronado, Ca.- After two-and-a-half years in business, Fuel Juicebar closed its doors last Saturday at 1pm. Serving locally roasted coffee, whole fruit smoothies and juices, wheatgrass, slow-cooked oatmeal and healthy snacks, the café filled a niche in the community.
“I think we met a need that wasn’t being met before. No one else on the island really had the same type of menu items. Over the last two years we saw a steady increase in our customer base—local San Diegans and tourists were finding us on Yelp and Trip Advisor and going out of their way to visit us. We are sad that we needed to close,” said owner Nina McDonald. “We will miss seeing our regular customers. It’s been very gratifying to experience the outpouring of community support.”
Rent costs and a pending rent increase were cited as the primary factors in the owner’s decision to close the business. Any questions or concerns can be emailed to Nina@fueljuicebar.com.

Comment by Mary C Valko on February 11, 2012 at 4:50am Rent increase? How sad that the building's owner could not see the loyal customer base and increase in visitors from other towns and then maybe think twice about making it impossible for a successful business to continue.
Comment by John m on February 11, 2012 at 8:16am I am so sad the little, healthy haven is now closed forever!
Comment by Coronado Bliss Salon & Spa on February 11, 2012 at 11:29pm Sorry to see Fuel go! Congratulations Nina, and thank you, for running a successful business in Coronado and for contributing to our community!
While Coronado is a popular tourist destination I seriously believe that the people who own commercial real estate here have not adapted to the current state of the economy. To raise already high commercial rent prices (when compared to San Diego) is crazy. Why they would risk the place sitting empty vs. working something out with a proven tenant is beyond me. This is the same building that raised rates so much the fitness center had to move. Coronado seems bent on not becoming a town of big chain businesses and yet it is becoming increasingly difficult for small businesses to survive, let alone thrive, in our town. Very sad. Best wishes to Nina, Tom & their family. I wish them all the best!
Comment by Stephanie Denius on February 13, 2012 at 10:46am Seems like the whole building has issues, we lost the Family Gym in that block too, which I'm sure reduced the customer flow downstairs to the Fuel Bar. Sad, I loved their oatmeal after working out.
I'm sorry to see this. I wasn't a regular necessarily but did enjoy going there.
