CORONADO, CA (October 9, 2012) The Hotel del Coronado has begun work to realign a pedestrian walkway as required by the hotel's City Council-approved Development Agreement and Master Plan.
The work will complete a continuous 14-foot-wide public walkway along the shoreline from Ocean Boulevard to Avenida del Sol. The walkway, called the Paseo del Mar, realigns a path that currently detours from the beach onto hotel property behind a raised berm to Avenida del Sol. The walkway realignment will provide increased access for emergency vehicles and the general public and views of the beach and ocean.
Work crews will provide signs with information on construction and any possible disruptions to traffic. There may be temporary impacts to traffic on Avenida del Sol as equipment is moved in, and hotel officials say there will be a five-day detour when the connection to the existing and new walkways eventually is made. The pedestrian detour will be provided through the hotel property connecting back to the Paseo del Mar.
The Paseo del Mar improvements include construction of the walkway along the beach on the ocean side of an existing berm to the west of the Avenida del Sol cul-de-sac. It will match the existing Paseo in place adjacent to the hotel and along the beach to the east of Ocean Boulevard/R.H. Dana Place.
Because a portion of the Paseo falls within the City right-of-way, an encroachment permit was required. The City approved the permit last week. The hotel is funding the project and will maintain the Paseo del Mar once built.
Work hours will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The project is expected to take up to eight weeks.
