Led by strong performances from freshman Hana Granillo
, junior Emily Dow
, and senior Elena Wang
, the Lady Islanders varsity tennis team defeated Francis Parker High School in a very close match on Tuesday, September 10.
The match ended with Coronado and Francis Parker tied at nine sets apiece, so the victory was awarded based on the team with the most games won (77 for CHS, 75 for FPHS).
Granillo, the top-seeded Islander, battled back from a 0-4 start, winning the next six games on her way to winning two back-to-back sets. Wang and Dow, the top-seeded doubles team for the Islanders, dominated their opponents, winning all three sets.
Varsity coach Rob Moore complemented the singles players for their focus and stamina, calling them "rock steady" in this match. Moore also highlighted the performance of freshman Maya Antes, who turned in six wins in her third set as it became increasingly clear that the match would go to the games-won tiebreaker.
The other CHS doubles teams, including the second-seeded team of juniors Madison Smith and Lauren McBride and the third-seeded team of freshman Amanda Ursitti and junior Emily Breay also turned in two set victories each in the winning effort.
The Lady Islanders tennis team will next be in action on Monday, September 17th against Mira Mesa High. The match begins at 3:00 p.m. on the CHS courts.
