LOCAL BREWERS UNITE TO SUPPORT
50th ANNIVERSARY OF NAVY SEAL TEAM ONE

CORONADO – When the call came in seeking support for the 50th anniversary of Naval Special Warfare SEAL Team One, the Coronado Brewing Company (CBC) was quick to act. The Coronado-based business had assisted numerous other military events over the years, including SUPERSEAL, SEAL Sprint and SUPERFROG, and has a long history of supporting our men and women of the Armed Forces.

Last week the 50th anniversary of SEAL Team One drew nearly 1,000 additional people from around the world for a four-day series of events and gatherings in and around Coronado. Among those in attendance were current and former admirals, Medal of Honor recipients and their families, and many active duty and former Frogs and SEALs. No one went home thirsty.

The Navy SEALS are home ported in Coronado. President John F. Kennedy established SEAL Team One in April 1962. SEAL Team One has been in the forefront of all major international conflicts and military operations ever since.

They have been a dominant factor in Grenada, the Iran-Iraq War, Panama, Somali, Afghanistan, and most recently in the termination of world terrorist Osama bin Laden.

“The call came in and we jumped at the opportunity to help out,” said Ron Chapman, who, along with brother Rick is founder of CBC. Chapman pledged 10 kegs of CBC brew on the spot.

Dot Harms is the new executive administrator for the San Diego Brewers’ Guild, and events coordinator at CBC. Between Guild and CBC efforts they were able to increase that to include 22 kegs and several beer dispensers.

“I’m from a Navy family,” said Harms. I know how important this donation was for all of those people gathering for their 50th anniversary. This is the least we can do, and it clearly demonstrates the strength and heart of the San Diego Brewers’ Guild and their generosity.”

In addition to CBC, the breweries participating in this very special cause included Karl Strauss, Green Flash and Ballast Point. “What a great beer community we have here in San Diego,” said Harms. “For such a young industry, the heart and soul of the Guild members is mature beyond its years, and is clearly evident in their willingness to support each other, and such a wonderful cause as the Navy SEALS.”

The mission of the San Diego Brewers’ Guild is to promote awareness and increase the visibility of fresh, locally brewed beer through education and participation in community events.

The Guild was founded in 1997 to promote area brewers and create an open line of communication and collaboration among San Diego brewers as well as serving as an advocate for the ever-changing beer production and trade laws. Their strength in numbers continues to impact legislation, industry growth and San Diego County tourism.

With 40-plus breweries and more than 70 affiliate members, the Guild has played no small role in creating collaboration county-wide and healthy competition benefiting all involved. “A rising tide lifts all boats,” said Harms, “and that’s our goal – to make the San Diego craft beer market bigger and better for all involved.”

The Coronado Brewing Company, as part of an annual partnership, recently donated beer to the largest tented flower show in the country - the Coronado Flower Show. CBC is active in the community in a number of ways. The Chapman family dates back more than a century on Coronado.
