Local Spotlight: The Coronado Sandman (Alberto Avilla)

We have been meaning to do this post for a while regarding one of our favorite locals, the Coronado Sandman. The kids go nuts every time we spot his 'sand art' around Coronado. So, here are a few of his masterpieces and some additional details about the Sandman:

Real Name: Alberto Avilla
Residence: Coronado (of course!)
Office: Coronado and Mission Beach Streets
Inspiration: Angel from above
Turn-ons: Painting with sand and spreading joy to those that appreciate his gift
Turn-offs: Getting citations from local police and grumpy complainers (booooo!)

My kids also go nuts when we spot his artwork. Actually...I go nuts for it too! LOL I still can't believe that he's gotten citations and complaints. He is a very unique and special part of Coronado and his art should be celebrated!

LOVE Mr Sandman!  Anyone who complains should just go back to New York...

I think it's a wonderful, inovative, inspirational  idea... The children look foward to it.. You don't have to go very far to get "The best of" (2nd place) in the united states beach full of a lot more sand then the "Sandman" spreads around. I was born and raised in Coronado and I wish we had a "Sandman" back then (a few years ago) ...

Pretty soon citations will be given to residents, and tourists that walk home bare footed from the beach with sand on their feet... I realize police work in Coronado can get pretty boring, but that's a WONDERFUL plus.. The "Sandman" is a fun and beuatiful art work added to Coronado's uniqueness and beauty. Leave the police to do their REAL work, busting a few drunks and the brawls caused by the drunks. :o) Long Live the "Sandman" and his art... :o)

Opps!! Please forgive me for my mispelled words... We should all proof read what we write. I think my all our opinions count though...:o)

Please remember that police don't MAKE the laws, they ENFORCE the laws already on the books.  If the City of Coronado doesn't want the police to enforce a certain law, then change it.  When people expect the police to selectively enforce a law, that's when trouble begins to brew because not everyone can agree on WHEN and WHO should be exempted.  Don't criticize the police for doing the job they were hired to do...change the laws you don't like.

The loving daughter of a former Coronado Police Dept. lieutenant who LOVED his city and loved his job, Dick Lee.

Talented and bringing smiles to people on a daily basis - if only there were more Mr. Sandman's in our world.
