Nicole Cerdinio is the 2011 recipient of the James Shirey Memorial Award for Dedication, Excellence, and Leadership. The award was presented at Martial Arts America's Annual Awards Ceremony held in December, by Sue Shirey and Sensei Miko Peled. Nicole began her training at Martial Arts America in 2007, earning her Junior Black Belt in 2010. She is a sophomore at Coronado High School and is also active in the Coronado High School Octagon Club, Softball team, and River of Giving. James Shirey, Jr. passed away in 2009 at the age of 14 following a sudden illness. He earned his Junior Black Belt at Martial Arts America in 2008. James loved life and had an infectious smile. He was a mentor to his classmates and a true friend who could always bring a laugh and a smile to any situation. Pictured is Sue Shirey, James Shirey's mother, with Nicole Cerdinio.
