Pastor Cameron Bernard was born in Missouri and lived in Kansas until he graduated from high school in Omaha, Nebraska. He wanted to get out of Nebraska, so he joined Navy. He has been in the ministry for a total of 4 years now after graduating from the College of Biblical studies and getting his Biblical degree in Christian Leadership. He was a pastor in Tomball, Texas for a year and has now been in Coronado for a year and a half. He also planted a church (taking a church from scratch and starting one up) in southern Houston. He describes his congregation as very diverse, coming from all ethnicities and from elderly to families with small children.
Pastor Bernard didn’t always want to become a pastor; he found his calling when he was almost 40. He says that God called him into ministry to help people and care for them.
He started going to church because he came across difficult times in life and sometimes when you have difficult times, you search for spiritual solutions. He says that through that, God found him. Through the process of understanding who God is, he started going to church and the more he did, the more he started liking that kind of environment. He enjoyed reading the Bible and learning about God. Soon enough, people started to notice that he was teaching them. His pastor in the outer banks of North Carolina suggested that he look into ministry because he felt “God had his hand upon him”. Bernard did not believe him. It was the last thing he wanted to do at the time because he was a successful consultant in the Navy, had just built a new house and thought he had reached the American dream. But soon learned to believe that when God has a call upon your life, there is no way to get away from it.
Over time he realized that what the priest in North Carolina had told him was true and at that point he did everything he could to get ready for ministry. He and his wife had to sell their house in 2006. They loaded up everything they owned in a U-Haul trailer and left North Carolina to go to seminary school in Houston, TX where his family lives and where his wife’s family is from. Many people told him “God has something special for you”. It wasn’t really his desire, it was more of other people seeing how God was working in his life and as they stirred him in that direction, God confirmed it.
Pastor Bernard is currently working two jobs. He devotes many hours to the church everyday and works in the Navy as a consultant in North Island whenever he can. He says if he hadn’t gotten into ministry, he would only be in the Navy.
He saw that Coronado’s First Baptist church was looking for a pastor and started working there a week after giving them his résumé. He and his wife loaded up the U-Haul trailer once more from Houston and brought their life to Coronado.
He says his two jobs were married together because of how perfectly they fit in the same place. It was definitely meant to be for him because of his calling for ministry and his love for the Navy. That spot becoming available in need for a pastor and Coronado, as a Navy town, was a match made in Heaven. His favorite thing to do in Coronado is go to the beach; he calls himself a “surfing pastor”.
He believes that for people in Coronado, family strength is the main spiritual focus. In this society families are in trouble, he wants to do the best he can to bring stability, love, and respect within loved ones. Incorporating fun events such as dinners, beach days, movie nights, concerts, etc. is one of his methods to integrating and promoting unity in the community and his church. The church has organized a concert titled “Rebuilding Today’s Family”, on March 17th at Tidelands Park to promote family week.
He shared his favorite Bible verse, Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart”. This psalm resonates directly in his heart because he feels it’s about his life. The more he enjoys God and serves in Him, the more meaning and importance his life has. “God gives your life meaning”. He even has a plaque of it in his office that was given to him by his last church!
Pastor Bernard wakes up at 4 every morning and goes to work in North Island at 5:30 everyday. He leaves there by 11am to go to the church and works there until about 3-4pm. Then there is usually something going on 2 to 3 nights a week, such as church meetings, outreach events, visitations, etc. When he is not working, Pastor Bernard likes relaxing with his wife and going to the beach. Again, family is a big priority. Meet the other "clergy of Coronado" here.
First Baptist Church is located at 445 C Avenue.
