Meet Local Coronado Othodontist -- Dr. Joseph Mullins

Some Coronado locals need braces to correct problems with their teeth, so why not trust a local to help with your smile?

Dr. Joseph Mullins is an Orthodontist located at 120 C Avenue, Suite 100 in Coronado. Before becoming a full time Coronado based orthodontist, Dr. Mullins obtained his undergraduate degree in Biology from West Virginia University, and then attended Dental School at West Virginia University where he got his Doctorate of Dental Surgery.

He and his wife, Condra, moved to San Diego for a Navy tour in 1998 and he served as the Dental Officer onboard the USS DULUTH, LPD-6 for the final three years of his Navy Service.  And if it’s not enough to have one bicuspid specialist in the family, the Mullins’ have two! Mrs. Mullins is a Dental Hygienist and worked at the Dental Clinic on North Island.

When Dr. Joseph Mullins was a child he needed braces, and according to him, it is the main reason he became on Orthodontist.  I recently interviewed Dr. Mullins to find out what motivated him to become an Orthodontist and how he likes living and working in our beautiful, little Crown Town.

What brought you to Coronado?

The Navy brought me to Coronado.  I was a general dentist in the Navy and was stationed one year at Naval Medical Center San Diego and three years as the Dental Officer on the USS Duluth.

How long have you had your practice in Coronado?

I started my Orthodontic practice in Coronado in February of 2007.

What led you to bring your family and business to Coronado?

Coronado is a great place to raise a family. The school system is amazing.  I proudly support the Coronado Schools Foundation contributing to both the Annual Telethon and the Dinner Auction.  Mullins Orthodontics also sponsors PATT's annual Art Auction at the Yacht Club.  You can't beat San Diego/ Coronado family activities and of course, the weather.

How did you decide to become an Orthodontist? Is there a story behind your decision?

I had extremely crowded and protruded teeth.  My Orthodontist gave me an amazing smile!  He changed my life and my self-confidence.  That is why I decided to become an Orthodontist.

Where did you go to school?

After dental school I did my Navy time as a Dental Officer.  Following the Navy, I returned to West Virginia University Orthodontics to receive my Master of Science in Orthodontics.

Finally, could you please give aspiring dentists some advice about what to study in college to become a dentist?

I would recommend a Biology, Business, or Dental Hygiene degree including all prerequisites for Dental School.

Dr. Mullins is a family man with two young children and takes pride in what he does.  What more could you ask for in someone who is working on the most used and noticed part of you: your smile!

Dr. Mullins is also an avid supporter of our public schools who donates generously through the Coronado Schools Foundation. Just one more way he brings great smiles to our community. Thank you to Dr. Mullins and his family.

We love the Mullins family :) My daughter, who is a patient of Dr Mullins, says that he sings during her appointments....a sure sign that he loves his work......

Dr. Mullins is a great orthodontist and a great man! My 8 year old daughter loves going to see him and he manages to always make it fun and upbeat (even when it is painful). We are blessed to have the Mullins family in Coronado and at St. Paul's church.

We love Dr. Mullins!  We're biased because we're lucky enough to call him our friend but he's done an amazing job with our son's teeth, too! :-)
