A message sent into space receives an extraterrestrial response.
This past week, I had the pleasure of walking down to our new state-of-the-art Coronado Village Theatre and readying myself for the explosive Battleship.
Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) finds a job as Lieutenant in the US Navy after living jobless with his brother Stone (a level-headed Navy Commander played by Alexander Skarsgard) for a few years. He gets into a tussle with a visiting Captain during a worldwide Navy exercise (RIMPAC) and is notified he will be dismissed once the group returns home from the high seas. Meanwhile, a NASA satellite has been sending out messages into deep space that all of a sudden receives a massive response in the form of extra-planetary vessels that land right in the middle of the RIMPAC ships. Alex is forced to assume responsibility for the crew and regain his family reputation while defending the country against an alien invasion.
This movie also features Brooklyn Decker and singer Rihanna (in her acting debut). Decker plays her part as a beach beauty and Hopper’s girlfriend well, but her acting skills miss the mark, and many of her scenes don’t seem to mesh with the rest of the movie. Rihanna plays her role as Petty Officer Cora Raikes efficiently, but she also only has a few scenes throughout the movie.
“My favorite actor was Taylor Kitsch because he seemed very enthusiastic and determined throughout the whole movie. Sometimes it was hard to follow what was happening with the aliens because of the constant battle scenes. Overall, I thought it was adrenaline packed,” said Coronado resident Kendal Reeder.
Ultimately, for those who love action movies, Battleship is a testosterone packed toe-to-toe battle between the human and alien races. The movie is a little slow in the beginning, but it speeds up quickly as the world’s military forces fight against advanced alien technology. If your not one for aliens and explosions, skip out on Battleship.
