As part of the Coronado Public Library's continuing commemoration of the Centennial of Naval Aviation, Chuck Sweeney, President of the Distinguished Flying Cross Society will give a talk on Saturday, September 17 at 11:00am in the Library Winn Room. Cdr. Sweeney has won three Distinguished Flying Cross medals. He will talk about his experiences over Vietnam that won him his first DFC medal. Sweeney flew A-4s with VA-22 from the USS Bon Homme Richard in the Tonkin Gulf. While flying as Executive Officer with VA-212, he won three DFC medals in one week flying air-strikes against North Vietnam.
Chuck Sweeney retired as Commander after 4300 flight hours and 757 carrier landings. He then spent 22 years in the defense industry with General Dynamics and BAE Systems before retiring in 2004. Sweeney has been active in the DFC Society since 2001, where he helped launch an Oral History Program. He is currently serving as the Society's President. His talk will complement the Coronado Public Library's new exhibit on Naval Aviation during the Korean and Vietnam War eras. This program is free of charge.
