Nominations Sought for Philanthropic Women for Ruby Award $1,000 Grant

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR PHILANTHROPIC WOMEN

CORONADO - The Coronado chapter of Soroptimist International (SI) has announced that applications are being accepted for the prestigious Ruby Award (Women Helping Women), an annual grant given to individuals who are making a difference in their communities.

“We are looking for women, who through their professional or volunteer work, are improving the lives of women and girls in their community,” explained Meridith Metzger, Public Awareness Chairperson for SI Coronado.  “SI chapters in 19 countries and territories around the world will be looking for ordinary women working in extraordinary ways.”

“We are accepting nominations until December 1 for women who have identified a need in their community and are working to help women and girls through social or economic empowerment,” said Carolyn De Lagrave, SI Coronado committee chairperson for the Ruby Award program.  “Applicants should be actively involved in a community-based project in the past two years, and an individual can nominate themselves or others.” Soroptimist members are not eligible for the award.

A $1,000 cash grant will be donated to the recipient’s charity of choice and the winner will be honored at the annual SI Coronado Legends Luncheon on May 18, 2013.  While the majority of Ruby Award winners are ordinary women, past honorees have included a congresswoman, a district attorney, a U.S. ambassador, a marine biologist, and a domestic violence expert.

A nomination form is available at http://www.coronadosoroptimist.org/pdf/ruby-award-nomination-form.pdf  Nominee names can also be submitted with contact information of nominee and of nominator (if different from nominee) with a statement (less than 750 words) describing why  the nominee should receive the Ruby Award.  Applications may be emailed to:  rubyaward@coronadosoroptimist.org; or mailed to Coronado Soroptimist, Attn: Ruby Award, P.O. Box 180345, Coronado, CA 92178.  For further information please contact Carolyn De Lagrave, cj@delagrave.com, 619-435-5283.
